    I absolutely despise Netscape Search. It is saturated with advertising and that Netscape bar at the top remains with you wherever you go. I've managed through the Mycroft download to get Google to work as the default by typing in the address bar at the top and clicking on the Search button located beside it. BUT if I simply hit Enter, that Netscape Search engine is enacted. Is there any workaround to completely get rid of the Netscape search?????

    James,

    captjlddavis now has a web page which has a workaround for the Netscape Toolbar Search. It will enable you to use the Search Engine of your choice, with the hack he provides:

    James,

    I am not sure what you did, it looks like you are using NS 7.2 (from your UA).

    1. Search from the urlbar + search button brings up "google" as you want. ( yes or no)

    2. You want to bring up "google" when you enter a search term in the url bar and hit "enter" ? (yes or no)

    3. You have adjusted the "keyword" pref to read:
    pref( "keyword.URL ", "http://www.google.com/search?q= "); ( yes or no)

    If yes, where and how did you adjust it ?

    4. You have enabled "keywords" in the Edit | Preferences | Smart browsing ? (yes or no)

    And you still get "Netscape" as a search engine. ?

    Please post back

    James,
    Thanks for getting back to me.....

    question 2, Yes you want to enter a search term in th url bar and hit enter and have the results come up in Google....great - we are on the same page now.

    Questio 3 - this is where we differ. The edit of the "netscapetoolbar.rdf" is for the "Netscape toolbar" search feature, not the main Url bar search feature.

    Perhaps I was not clear in my other reply. ( problem with multiple posts)

    To get the results that you want ( enter search term in MAIN url bar and hit enter ) and search with "Google" you must have this basic entry someplace to set the default "keyword" searchengine:

    pref( "keyword.URL ", "http://www.google.com/search?q= ");

    If you have a user.js file, copy the entry below to it:

    user_pref( "keyword.URL ", "http://www.google.com/search?q= ");

    If you do not have a user.js , you can create one -

    OR you can you can edit the entry via "about:config" - filter for "keyword" (no quotes) -

    this will result in

    keyword.URL with a value, select Modify and change the value to

    "http://www.google.com/search?q= " ( with no quotes )

    Both of these edits will be profile specific.

    If it works for you , will get into makeing it a global setting.....

    Please give this a try and post back if there is any problem.

    regards:captjlddavis

    I myself used tips Ramona had posted on here website for changing the default Netscape search to use Google instead....

    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns72TBhack.html

    *** Edit ***

    I haven't tried it yet. I've made the changes to my browser, but I haven't closed my browser out and restarted it yet to see if it works.

    Just closed my browser to test it out. It works perfectly. However, one side note. You should close Netscape out completely before trying to make those changes to the netscapetoolbar.rdf file. If you leave Netscape open, it saves the current settings to the file when you exit... thereby overwriting the changes you just made.

    The other thing you can do is edit the file and make your changes, but don't save the changes.... leave the file open.... close Netscape. Once Netscape is fully closed, save the file. Now open up netscape and you can use the Netscape Search toolbar to search from Google.
