    Greetings:
There is a local Lottery website that I visit 3 times each week. Since last Wednesday as soon as the webpage appears 3 large Quicktime symbols appear almost obliterating the page. Fortunately, there is a small area open where I can click on a link to take me to the next page. I can't recall anything at this website that would activate Quicktime so I can't imagine what it is doing. I figured there must be something wrong with Quicktime so I removed it and re-installed. Still the same problem. When I went to MIME settings (whatever that means) I clicked on Use Defaults. Should I be doing something else with these settings? I just don't have enough knowledge to know what I should be doing.
Out of curiosity, I went to Search - Quicktime and found 35 files. Some appear to be duplications. Again, the limited experience, but I wondered if, when I removed Quicktime, these files remained and may have caused the problem to continue. Could I delete these files without doing damage?
This is just a nuisance problem but I hope you can tell me how to get rid of it.
    Thanks, Teric

    Hi teric,

I wouldn't delete any files just yet. Is the QT Player actually opening? Is there any information, or window that says anything at all. Also it would be help if you could give us the link to the troublesome page. What version of QT are you using now?

    Hello again, Ramona.
Thanks for replying so quickly. I downloaded the free QT version 6.5.1 directly from the website.
This is the lottery site I use: http://www.bclc.com/

When the QT symbols pop up nothing plays and there is no other window or message referring to QT. Instead, the symbol changes almost immediately to the QT finished or ended symbol. I've tried clicking on them to see if able to delete but just get a QT menu which doesn't offer any help. I guess I should have mentioned this in my posting.
    Thanks again for your kindness.

    Hi Teric,

I don't use Quick Time, but I did look through the page source of the Lottery site, but most of the Java looks like Greek to me. There is obviously something that triggers QT, but I don't have the Java knowledge to know what it is.

Do you use ZoneAlarm for your Firewall? If so, open the control center, and in the left panel, click on: Program Control
    Next:
In the upper right hand corner, under the "Help" icon, click on: Programs

    Scroll down to Quick Time
Click on: Trusted, and select "?Ask "
Click on: Internet, and select "?Ask "

If you use another Firewall then you should have similar settings. By using these settings QT cannot access the Internet without your allowing. ZoneAlarm will ask if you wish to allow QuickTime to access the Internet.

Or if you wish to block QT from accessing the Internet you can select "Block" rather than "?Ask ".

    Hi Ramona:
Thanks again for the advice. I removed ZoneAlarm a year ago because of problems and installed Norton Internet Security 2004.
I went to the firewall, chose Custom as opposed to Default, found Quicktime in Programs and selected Block. The symbols no longer appear.
You are brilliant. As an amateur I would never have thought of the firewall. I will learn gradually. Your help is appreciated.

    teric,

Glad you were able to block QT. That program is so greedy, and once it is installed it tries to take over your PC...

    Tetric,

The advise you've received here isn't at all very good. Your problem has nothing at all to do with Quicktime and you should not block Quicktime. The problem is that the page you are trying to view is trying to request a plugin that is not available on your system. More specifically, the plugin that is being requested is Macromedia Flash Player 7.

Go here to download and install the latest Flash Player Plugin

And no.... Quicktime does nothing to try to take over your PC... RealOne is the piece of **** that tries to take over your PC.

    Similar Problem with Quicktime

I'm having a similar problem with the new Quicktime the nice folks at Apple sold me (I thought - wrongly - that going "pro" would solve the problem). On sites such as cnet.com, where I used in Mozilla (and still do in IE) see some video, all I get now is the "broken" Quicktime logo. I've followed the suggestions above but no luck. Any other ideas? Thanks

Welcome to the Forum, Peter Rouss!

    Peter,

The videos on the cnet.com are Macromedia Flash files. Go to the Macromedia Flash Download site and download Version 7,0,19,0. Then view your video's on cnet.com.

Ramona - thanks for the quick reply - however I do have the latest Flash plugin downloaded and installed and I am still getting this problem.

I should mention I have Zone Alarm running, which some of the prior posts indicated could be a problem, but I have Quicktime and Flash enabled to access the Internet.

    What do you suggest?

    Thanks

I have Quick Time and Flash plugins and Zone Alarm 5.1.003.000 as well. Have no conflicts with that web page.

    Peter,

Check your QuickTime preference settings for MIME types, and if there is a setting for Flash Files, then disable that setting. I have no idea, as I don't use QT. I seriously doubt there is, but worth a look. When you installed SWFlash, and pointed it to Mozilla, did you check the plugins folder to ensure the plugin files were there (npswf32.dll)?

You might try reinstalling SWFlash on top of itself, pointing it to Mozilla and see if this helps.

Ramona - thank you so much for your help - there is an option to disable Flash Files hidden inside the Miscellaneous MimeTypes menu in QT and that seems to have worked.

Separately (or maybe not), I had begun having problems with some sites, particularly the Wall Street Journal, that were locking up, with CPU maxed out at 100% and the browser looking for "amch.questionmarket.com" - I had to use Task Manager just to close Firefox. I was wondering if that could somehow be related to the problem I was having with Quicken and Flash - it seems to have gone away since I disabled Flash in Mime Types but Firefox still acts rather sluggishly on the WSJ page (ironic since the Journal's Mossberg is a big proponent of Firfox).

    Peter,

QuestionMarket is adware/spyware, and if you have AdAware or SpyBot installed run them both to remove this tracking cookie. What it is does is report your browsing history to one or more web sites. If you don't have Adaware or Spybot, then visit these sites to install and run both applications:

    AdAware SE Personal Edition 1.05
    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3

    Both the applications are freeware.

This has nothing to do with your QT MIME type problem, but does have to do with the sluggishness of your PC.

Ramona - thanks for the help (would have replied sooner but my wife just had a baby - sure puts computer problems in a different place on your priority list!).

I already had Spybot and AdAware installed and run them once a week or so, but the Adaware had got out of date (my version has been superceded by a new one and the update feature wasn't telling me that and wasn't fully updating the reference files either) so your post prompted me to look into that and when I ran the new version it found all sorts of stuff! I'm surprised because I thought that switching to Firefox substantially reduced the risk of getting spyware and other malware on to your PC.

    Peter,

Congratulations on the baby! Indeed a child does completely change priorities, but in a wonderful way.

No, Firefox does not reduce the risk of spyware/adware. That is the user's responsibility, and browsing habits have more to do with this than anything. Glad that you were able to get rid of the pesky adware.
