    Hi
I'm asking this question for my niece who is running windows 98 she just installed Norton Anti Virus Professional and it seems since this install the computer is constantly freezing, while on the internet for awhile everything just freezes, mouse won't work, can't get off the internet etc. Could this be a problem with the Norton AV? She said her computer froze a few times before this but it didn't seem to happen this much before she installed the Norton AV. She's had Norton AV before this and she just installed the latest version. Anyone else having this problem? Or may know what can be done, would sure be thankful for any help.

Sorry you were overlooked until now.
A computer freezing up can be caused by several things. While the installation of Norton may have brought the problem to light, I think it existed beforehand. I think the first thing that should be tried is a complete cleanup of all temporary files, a huge source of problems if allowed to build up over time. The following method works better than what you can do in windows 98.
Restart in Dos Mode, and do these commands. The first will appear to do nothing, it speeds things up.
    smartdrv
    deltree c:\windows\cookies
    deltree c:\windows\history
    deltree c:\windows\temp
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1
    scanreg /opt

Type a Y that you want to delete, check for typos at this time. When done reboot. The folders what are being deleted will be rebuilt upon bootup.

This seems to be a Hardware issue. How old is the PC ?
What is the make/model/driver version of the video card ?
Norton AV (apart from being useless, in my opinion) places a great
load on your PC eg 240 + registry entries and high memory usage.
The app has been going fast downhill since Symantec bought out Norton.
    regards
PS May I suggest deleting Norton AV and investigating the rarer
crashes separately ? For antivirus, AVG is a much better and
    free product.

FWIW, I had (have) a similar experience wih Norton AV 2004; removed Norton AV: things got better but still have freezes. I have related them to two programs --- Msgsrv32 and Lexpps. See my post on that subject on 9/28/04. ...wdc

I'd apprecxiate learning how well Markp62's suggestion

<Restart in Dos Mode, and do these commands. The first will appear to do <nothing, it speeds things up.
    <smartdrv
    <deltree c:\windows\cookies
    <deltree c:\windows\history
    <deltree c:\windows\temp
    <deltree c:\windows\tempor~1
    <scanreg /opt

worked. Any problems? I'm wondering if I should dare try it. ... wdc

Tipzigfuzz: FWIW, see my latest post (two or three posts abovethis one) -- in which I report success with a problem that may be similar to yours. Good luck. ... wdc
