Hi Ramona - I was just able to import the old address book from NS 4.8 to NS 7.1 so that issue is resolved.

    Regards,

    Graham :)

Graham, to see the end of the string in the Preference window, left click anywhere on that path, then press the "End" button on the Keyboard.

I would highly recommend NOT EMPTYING YOUR RECYCLE BIN, until you have everything in place and a working browser and mail client.. (I'm not yelling at you, just emphasizing.)

To Export the Address Book as an LDIF file:
Open the Address Book, click on Tools | Export
Give the file a name and save to a folder on the HD
Then open Thunderbird and click on Tools | Import
Navigate to the folder containing the LDIF file and select the file

O.K., good, you have the Address Book in place. In the Profiles folder, remove all profile name and salted folders to a temporary folder, EXCEPT the "good" Profile. That way there will be no further confusion. If you are absolutely certain that you have all your Profile data assembled correctly, then you can install Thunderbird and move your mail files to Thunderbird. Move only the files without an MSF extension. Don't copy the MSF files (Inbox.msf or Sent.msf) Don't try copy the entire Mail folder, even tho this is more tedious, it's safer. BACKUP everything before making any edits.

If you need a refresher on manually copying Mail from Profile to Profile:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7mailtrnsfr.html

Once you have both Firefox and Thunderbird working, make a backup of both programs. Do this frequently, at least 3xweek...

Hi Ramona - Continuing this saga...I have copied folders and files from both NS 7x and Ns4x over to Tbird. However when I open Tbird it only opens using the information copied over from NS 7.1. I would like to show you the hierarchy from the Explore screen but can't get the screen to print in this document. How do I do this?

    Graham,

There's no reason why the Messenger Mail files shouldn't copy from Communicator to Thunderbird. In fact I just copied a couple of folders from my 4.79 Mail to one of my Thunderbird Mail Accounts.

Both Netscape programs must be closed, including Quick Launch. Copy only the files from Communicator's Messenger with NO SNM extensions. Did you remember to rename the files in Communicator's Messenger?

Hi Ramona - I have been making progress setting up the various email files in Tbird, however, have run into a problem. After copying all mail from the various accounts on NS4x NS6 and NS7x to Tbird I created a mail folder for one of my client's mail in my new active profile (in Thunderbird), I then transferred all mail for this client to the new folder and checked that it was there. Since this mail covers several years I then made an archive folder for the client and separated old from current mail. I checked that the desired mail had been moved into the folder. I moved the archive folder into the main client folder by moving it from where I had created it within Tbird but when I opened the folder within the main client folder the contents were gone. Where did these mail files go to? They are not in the trash and I did a file search and of course the folder was there, but empty.

    Regards,

    Graham

When you moved the archive folder, you made it a subfolder of the client folder? Did you right click and select "Move to" or "Copy to "? If you have searched both your HDD and Thunderbird, then that Mail must be lost. For future moves, I always suggest that you use "Copy to ", then you risk nothing. Have you checked in all the Mail folders? If you are making backups each time you edit, can't you replace those files from your backup? If you aren't making backups, then I strongly recommend doing so...

When I moved the archived file folder I moved it within the Explore window by left clicking on the folder and dragging it into the client folder. Yes, I have the files on E drive but not separated into current and old mail. I was hoping to avoid doing it over. Why would using the drag and drop method lose the files within the folder? Obviously you favor the copy paste scenario. Duly noted.

    Graham,

I was talking about moving the Mail in Thunderbird. You can do it there as well.

In Explorer, you should use a right click to move data.

Ramona - OK but I guess the contents were somehow lost during drag and drop. How does that happen or are they buried somewhere? When I look within Tbird I now have 2 folders with the same name and one is the empty one. When I originally moved moved the folder I gave it another name so as not to conflict. That name is gone according to MS98 "find" program.

    Regards,

    Graham

    Hi Graham,

If you can't find the Mail with the "Find" feature, then it no doubt is gone. I've done that myself, and learned the hard way to always "Copy" and never "Cut" or drag 'n drop. If you remember the content or subject of any of those messages you might try a "Find" using that information.

Your best best is to do that type of editing within Thunderbird. A right click gives you a context menu which allows you to "Move to" or "Copy to" (any highlighted messages) the folder of your choice. You can always go back later and delete the folder from which you copied.

Hi Ramona - I'm back and will be working getting everything converted over to Firefox and TBird. These are superior programs. I guess I've lost the mail in that particular folder I was moving so I'll recopy from E drive when I get the time.

Question - can I set TBird up to automatically to do a spell check like I can in NS? If so how?

    Thanks and regards,

    Graham
