    :( Hello.....PLEASE HELP !!!!

I just purchased two Hitachi 60Gb 7,200 RPM Hard Drives to install in My two DELL Latitude Laptops. It took me forever, but I finally figured out how to connect the HD as an external mass storage device, and went into "Admistrative Tools" within the Control Panel, and named the external drive "G" and then proceeded to format it completely. However, when I attempt to install Windows on the Drive, The installation process absolutely will not allow me to install windows on the "G" drive. What did I do wrong ?!?!?! I know of no other way of installing windows on the hard drives so I can then install the hard drives in my Laptops. Can anyone PLEASE help ?!?!?! You have no idea how grateful and appreciative I would be for any assistance or advice / direction !!!

    Sincerely, and with warmest regards,
    Brian O. Pigg

I am puzzled by this - why don't you remove the existing drive from the laptop, install the new one and then boot from the XP CD to install Windows?

I would be fairly sure that external hard drives connected by - I assume from your thread title - USB are not seen before the m/c is booted into Windows and the USB drivers loaded.

This link should give you a better idea about how to replace the HD http://www.bay-wolf.com/hdd8000.htm You have to use the drive bay it won't work for Windows as an external drive. External can be your second, etc.. drive.

I'm going to do that one of these days. I want a faster HD on my Inspiron 8200. It would be like getting a new, faster laptop. I guess they don't usually run any hotter, 1 less worry. You can always put the old drives in the USB box for storage.
