Hi All, Has anyone seen statisitcs about % PC users with 848 x 480,
    800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1152 x 864 screen resolutions ?
Has a discussion today with a friend who posts to his webpage with
1024 x 768. I use 800 x 600, and have to use scroll bars to view his pages.
Which is best resolution for him to use ? .. or is there a trick that will auto-change the page size to your own PC's settings. (using IE Based browser)
    regards

There is a trick. If your friend would define the width of the components of his web page in percentages rather than pixels, it should display the same no matter what the resolution of the viewer's monitor.

If he sets it up using pixels, it will always use that number of pixels. The higher the resolution, the more pixels there are on the viewer's monitor.

For example, if the viewer has 800 pixels available and the web page is sit up to use 1024 pixels, that extra 224 pixels will require scrolling horizontally to be seen. If the page is set up to use 80% (or 85% or 90% or whatever number he chooses) of the screen, it will use 80% (or 85% or 90% or whatever percentage he chooses) no matter how many pixels are available on the viewer's monitor.

Usually depends on monitor size. 15" CRT monitors are usually set at 800x600 with some opting for 1024x768. 17" CRT monitors are I think it's fair to say, the most popular size in the CRT type and are usually set at 1024x768. 19" monitors are either 1024x768 or 1152x864 and above.
15" LCD monitors work well at 1024x768.

    Not sure about 848x480.

Many people will operate different from these examples, but these are average preferred settings. Graphic designers and video production types will often run higher settings to increase resolution and screen real estate.

Thanks for the interesting advice - I have given the tips to my friend and
learned something for myself. It is interesting that we think that, when creating a web page, everyone else viewing the page, sees it as we do on our own PC. That is erroneous.
    regards
