I have found that I can often unfreeze my Aptiva 545 pc (with Windows 98) by:
     Clicking C-A-D
 Noting that "Msgsrv32" is shown as "(not responding)â€
     Ending Msgsrv32
 Noting that "lexpps" is active and ending it (sometimes I have to click CA-D several times)

    Can someone please tell me:

 What is Msgsrv32 and how can I eliminate it from "not responding?" "“ I have been told that it may somehow be related to Power Management.

 How can I stop "lexpps" from popping up in the C-A-D list? -- FWIW, based on advice I have received I have renamed lexpps.exe as lexpps.old and for a while I do not get frozen up. But after a few hours (or less) I find that lexpps.exe is back! and freeze ups recur.

I am getting desparate and would love to find someone who can tell me what may be going on. Thanks for any help you can offer. "¦. wdc

    Msgsvr.exe info click here.
Lexpps.Exe belongs to your Lexmark printer, and is intended for sharing your printer on a peer to peer network. It loads along with your printer drivers at windows startup, the renaming of it is all you can to stop it from loading, perhaps a different name.
BTW, the commands on the other thread are good for a general cleaning out.

From my search markp62 seems to be right about lexpps.

Personally, I would see about updating the drivers. Go to Add/Remove programs and remove/uninstall anything related to printers. Go to the printers folder in Control Panel and remove any Lexmark printers. Reboot with your printer switched off. Go to the Lexmark site and find the latest drivers for your model. Install the new drivers, switch the printer on, then run the "Add new printer" wizard (check the Lemark installation instructions though).

I would not be content with "you have to rename lexpps ". I would email Lexmark for some answers.

You should be able to stop the Lexmark program running at startup using msconfig or Hijack This (post back if you are not sure about these).

PS Could try the file checker. Look in Help -> System File Checker.

markp62, mattman: Thank you both very much. You gave me more info than I have been able to get in more than 3 months. I will work on your suggestions.

BTW, I am <not> familiar with msconfig or Hijack; would appreciate further hand-holding. ... wdc

    Hi,
Since the choo-choo train is picking up passengers I thought I jump aboard and assist. I have had to help someone with a similiar problem and all I did was go to msconfig and the last I knew all was well. Since you stated you are not familiar with msconfig, I will guess you mean the steps in which to do so. Go to start, run, type in msconfig, look for the printer thing as mentioned, and on the left side you will see a box with a check mark in it, uncheck it, on the bottom right click apply, two tabs to the left of that click ok and a box will pop up asking if you want to restart, click yes and that should take care of it. Hope that helps. I also hope I did not step on anyones toes by answering that question, I just wanted to throw in my experience with it...

MasterGreen: Thanks for the help. Can you clarify, please, "look for the printer thing mentioned?" I see a LexStart with a check mark under System Configuration Utility\Startup. Is that the box I should uncheck?

Re the Msgsrv32 article, Knowledge Base 169987: it applies to W95. I have asked MS for a W98 equivalent but have not yet heard back. The screen options for W98 are not the same as those indicated in the article.

    Hi,
The definition I have of Lexstart is as follows:

"Lexmark Printer software may add Lexstart.exe in the startup folder to handle print commands that you send to the printer to work correctly-not in the case of a Lexmark Z42 for instance "

My suggestion is to uncheck it (and I apologize for leaving out the step to click on the startup tab) and after you reboot go back to msconfig/startup and see if it remained unchecked. If it did, then back out and try printing something to see what happens, if your printer prints with or without it. If it does then great and if does not then you know you'll need to go back in and put a check mark back in the box...Keep us posted.

The advice from this site sounds like the ticket. Just scroll down the tasklist to lexpps.exe and read the recommendation. I will, however, cut and paste the said same here:

    Recommendation :
This task is a comprehensive nightmare. From preventing your PC from booting up, to interfering with your network card, to asking your Internet firewall for permission to install itself as a server application, to general PC instability, this task has everything to make you instantly return your Lexmark X or Z Series printer and go for something else, and some users have done so !! In order to regain your sanity the first thing to do is to rename LEXPPS.EXE to LEXPPS.EXE.OLD (do it in Safe Mode if you cannot boot your PC normally) "“ this will ensure that this task never loads and will cure all the problems that it causes. If you need to network the printer over a peer to peer network, do not use the standard manner, instead install the printer as a local printer on the remote PC, and then go and change the port from a local port to the network share that the printer is known as.

I might also suggest possibly visiting the support site for this printer and check to see if there is a patch or known problem/fix for the msgsvr32 lockup. Perhaps driver updates?? although Printer updates can sometimes snowball into small nightmares it may be worth a shot if you must have file and print sharing for this device.

Hello all: Your suggestion to push Lexmark on my freeze-up problem paid off.

    Lexmark sent me these instructions:

“The file, LEXPPS, is only necessary to enable bi-directional printing to
the Z Series printers over a peer-to-peer network. You may also be seeing
"RPCSS" related errors, which are affiliated with LEXPPS. If the printer is
connected directly to your PC, the file is not used, (or should not be
used) at all. Rename it be going to a DOS window. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt,
type "cd system" and press "Enter." At the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM type "ren
lexpps.exe lexppstmp.exe" and press "Enter." Then, type "ren lexpps.bak
lexppstmp.bak" and press "Enter." Reboot your system and please try
    printing again.â€

That fix seems to have worked! I have had no freeze-up now for more than 36 hours.

The key, I think (but can’t explain) is renamimg lexpps.bak as well as lexpps.exe. (I never did understand what these bak files did.)

My pc hasn’t been behaving this well for the last year! I can’t thank you all enough for your interest and help. "¦wdc

It feels so good when you pin a problem down and zap it, doesn't it? Particularly if this has been a plaguing you for a year. I guess your sanity is no longer in jeopardy at least for the current moment.

Thanks for the update and sharing the total fix and your most welcome.

    ====F.Y.I.======
By the way guys and gals, I read somewhere along the way that disabling this using ordinary means such msconfig, etc. was a no-go. It was either not available as an option or always came back. I forget which. The only sure way was a "rename" as suggested.

    Mark62,
On review, I see you had suggested the same much earlier, even used the same link. Perhaps it took a little more expanded explanation. This was a joint effort and hand shakes are shared. This post is a done deal...bye.
