Email links won't work in my Thunderbird either

I have had the very same problem as mentioned in all the threads above. Before upgrading to the newer Firefox and Thunderbird there were no problems. After upgrading, e-mail links from Thinderbird went to Internet Explorer, regardless of the settings in IE, Thunderbird or Firefox. I went as far as uninstalling Internet Explorer which I never used anyway, but to no avail.

Thunderbird email links now go unanswered, as if it is trying to find Internet Explorer which is no longer there.

The registry is also defaulting to Firefox as the main browser in every location possible.

I believe there must be a bug in the newer Thunderbird installed in Windows 98SE.

    I hope I am wrong.

    Peem,

I have Mozilla 1.7.3, Netscape 7.1, 7.2, and Communicator 4.79 installed, and any link I click in Thunderbird 0.8 opens Firefox 1.0 PR. I run Windows 98SE... Thunderbird launches the default system browser when you click on links. If there is a bug, and I didn't find one, I have managed to dodge the bullet.

Have you double checked any other Mozilla or Netscape browsers you may have installed to ensure they are not enabled as the default browser?

Open Windows Explorer, click on View | Folder Options | File Types
Scroll down to: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
Is Thunderbird the application to handle this protocol?

This is the workaround, but as you have uninstalled IE, it won't be of any use to you:

    Close Firefox
Now make IE your default browser
    Close IE
Open Firefox and make it your default browser

    Tried it

What you mentioned was done before I removed Internet Explorer and led me to remove it as a way to try and solve the problem.

I re-installed Mozilla 1.8a4 made it the default browser and Thunderbird would not recognize it. I don't want to re-install MSIE and OE and will have to drag and drop from Thunderbird links to Firefox for now.

At any rate, it's time to reformat the root directory and start off with a clean install. Maybe I can try and budget a new higher capacity hard drive for the event.

    Thanks for the help

I have always kept IE, if nothing else because it is part of the OS. I even keep the shortcut hidden. It is possible that under such conditions you may not be able to set up a proper default. You would not need to reinstall OE.

    Peem,

What did you have listed in the Registered File Types for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol? The Default browser is the one set up to handle URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Mozilla looks specifically at the Application
entry in the DDE section of the File Types dialog.

    Registry Key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\HTTP\Shell\Open\ddeexec\Application
