My printers stopped working and the reason it gives is because the print spooler isn't running. Is there any simple way to remedy this?

What type of printer is it? Model? Make?

Sorry Maverick, I have a HP Laserjet 1012 and a HP Deskjet 952c and they are both disabled because my spooler isn't running.

In the system tray, look for your printer icon. R-click will bring up an options menu, select 'Refresh'. If that does not work, shut down the system and then turn off your printer. Wait a minute before rebooting both.

OK Maverick, here's what happened. I did the refresh from the printer menu, it didn't fix my problem. I shut down the system, turned off the printers and when I rebooted the printer came on fine until I tried to print. Then it said printer spooler not running.

I know my USB works because I have no problems with my Digital Camera or Scanner.

It sounds like these printers are not on a network.... it's strange you're getting these error messages.

Do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and click on the Processes tab. Locate the process named 'spoolsv.exe'. R-click on it select 'Set Priority' > then 'Normal'.

I had the same problem with my HP5550 ( USB ) and my HP5580 ( Network )until I went to the properties of each by way of Start/Settings/Printers and Faxes and unchecked " Enable Print Spooling " under the PORT tab of each printer.

When I started my computer today my printers are gone from Start\Printers and Faxes. Also when I do Ctrl+Alt+Del there is no spoolsv.exe in the process list. I can Run services.msc and start the print spooler but it doesn't help. I expect I will have to reinstall Windows.

I would start out by un-installing/re-installing the printers ONE AT A TIME.

Get one working ( hopefully ) and then go for the other.

If they are both USB, that can sometimes be a problem also. It was for me when I had two USB printers. I put one on another machine and all was then OK.

Or just try disconnecting one and see if the other picks up.

My be a possible driver conflict.

I'm sorry if I can't explain my problem any better, but it is not possible for me to uninstall or install my printers. Nor can I switch printers since as far as my computer is concerned unless I can get my print spooler running it won't have anything to do with printers. I have tried deleting the printers but even that isn't possible without the spooler running. Cannot check printer properties or access anything related to printing.

I just did some checking and learned something new.

I went to services and stopped Print Spooler.

Went to Start/Settings/Printer & Faxes. NOTHING there.

Restarted Print Spooler and the printers are back.

I am totally out of ideas now.

What I really meant by disconnecting one was to pull the USB plug. And maybe even restart Windows after doing same. As I mentioned before. I had problems when I had two USB printers.

I still have problems if I try to SHARE my USB Printer. That is why I went to a Network Printer. But you may not be able to do that.

    Print Spooler Error

I didn't see specific info, but this seems like the same problem I'm having on a remote PC. The problem does not seem to be with an installed or attached printer, but, rather, the print spooler service itself.

Related System Event IDs: 7031, 7034
    Related Application Event IDs: 1000, 1001, 1004

The Print Spool service is set to "Automatic" but it closes a few seconds after it is started Automatically or Manually and generates another set of Event IDs as listed above. There are currently no printers installed and the error still occurs. This occurs in all profiles - including the local Administrator.

Maybe remove and reinstall the print spooler component of Windows XP SP1? Any recommendations?

    Hello
As for my print spooler, no one could tell me what the problem was. Since my computer needed a cleaning anyway, I just formatted the drive and reinstalled windows. Thanks to everyone that attempted to fix my problem.
