Computer was shutting down for no reason.

Tried all the posssable peripheral/hardware issues/swaps, nothing proved positive.

For S&G decided to format and re-install OS although I really don't think it's the problem...

OK, I get to the Win2K build screen (blue screen) where it stops loading and changes to the question pages (re install repair etc...).

But what happens is that the screen changes from blue with a bottom gray bar giving load progress to a solid blue screen and locks up....

    I have used a 98 floppy to format the floppy ( /s).

    Nothing....

I installed another HD for S&G again....SAME FREAKING THING!!!!!!!

I don't have many hairs left to pull out.....any ideas?

    thanks...Bill

Best to change the boot order in BIOS to CD first followed by the HD, and after booting with the install CD, use the menu to delete the existing partition, recreate it and do a full format preferably using NTFS.

Suggest before trying again, you remove all cards and external devices except Graphics card, mouse and keyboard. Also set the BIOS back to the setup defaults, rechecking the first boot order is from the CD. May even be worthwhile removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes, reinserting it and then select setup defaults. If removing the battery to clear the BIOS was effective, you will need to reset the time/date in BIOS as well.

Bill usually in such cases it indicates problems with overheating or the PSU failing. Since you've tried to install it onto a different HDD, I would consider replacing the PSU.

Also do you have any external devices connect to the PC while you're installing the OS? If there are any external USB/Firewire devices connected, disconnect them before you proceed.

    Good call MAVERIC...

I never heard an audible beep from the case speaker so I didn't go there (processor temp) on my first evaluation....SPEAKER WAS BAD!!!!

I went back and checked settings and alarm/shutdown was set at 140 degrees F!!!

Raised that and put in new speaker. Computer no longer shuts off!

    But......

OS load still hangs. Tried to flash BIOS (sHUTTLE av41 SA 07 BOARD) AND FLOPPY WON'T WRITE TO CHIP.

Replacement board is $59 so I'm going that route.

    I'll let you know.

    Thanks for the input

    Bill

I assume you have good backups?
I would go the reformat route before forking out for a new MB.
Be carefull about assuming it's the MB, because if your problems all stem from heat, the chances are you could have a CPU, Memory or other card fault, and buying a new MB won't solve the problem.
Swap out some memory, reseat the CPU, graphics and other cards as well as checking other connections, then (if still required) a reformat, well before a new MB.
