I removed a hard drive from win 98, and now (perhaps for this reason) the two cds are not recognized. In control panel, system, drives, I see that the Primary IDE controller (single FIFO) and Secondary IDE controller (single FIFO) have yellow exclamation points. I looked in the registry for filters that might be the problem, taking a cue from instructions for this problem for xp, but didn't see anything quite comparable to what the xp registry shows. Help.
    Reinstall windows?

Usually just "removing" a drive should not require rejumpering the devices.

However, if the devices were previously set to CS-Cable Select, you need to change it to 'master' jumper if there is only one device on that IDE channel.

    Welcome to the BBS.

Pay no attention to this sniping going on. It is NOT normal for this board. The participants should take it to the IM side and stop boring us with it.

Before you took the hard drive out were the both of them on the same IDE channel (Primary) and the CD's on the Secondary? A little more info might help for troubleshooting.

The exclamation points in your device manager can sometimes be fixed by removing the controllers and rebooting. They would be rebuilt automatically.

Come back and tell us how things were before and after removing the drive as far as jumpers and cables and the like.
