Unable to move slider to change screen area

Also, the background color on web pages makes text almost unreadable.

On the site where the slider is, I have a choice of 16 or 2 colors.


This is just since I reinstalled W98SE.

My previous thread was closed but I want to thank everyone who responded.
My C drive is formatted and the modem is working ok.(I updated the driver
for pci. Still some minor problems, but I hope you can help me get the
above problem resolved.)

Your current problem just needs the proper video drivers to be installed.

Go to the above link and get Everest, it will identify your video card for you, and most of your other hardware.
Post what it reports, and assistance will given as to where to get them, if needed.

Glad to read thing are coming along.

Now that you do have 98SE re-installed and working again ( needs Video drivers fixed up ) I may be able to give you some ideas how the avoid some problems again.

There is no need to format to re-install 98SE. ( only under extreme circumstances )

During the install I hope you allowed it to make a Startup Floppy. If not then there is a provision ( SOMEWHERE ) to make one.

You can then boot directly to the floppy from a power off state. Type D:\Win98\setup. Of coures D: only represents the letter of the CDROM.

Then watch carefully as the steps go by and make sure Windows goes back into the EXISTING folder. ( normalyl C:\Windows. )

Doing thie saves A LOT of work. And will ( 98% of the time ) Preserve what you already have. Videos drivers are one thing that may get messed up though. But overall it does a good kob of preserving things.

Of course any udates etc. will need to be reloade but that is about it.

But there is one other IMPORTANT step. Make sure you Anti-Virus checker is turned off. And also any Firewall should be shut down.

Open Everest. In the left pane click Display, then Windows Video. That will tell you what video card you have and down at the bottom there is a link to where you can download the latest driver for it. Just Dbl Click the link and go from there.

This is my first computer and I bought it new @4 /1 years ago from Dell.

I have the Dell Dimension Resource CD that came with it. It mentions something about device drivers. Would that have the info you need?

Would I suffer a complete loss of respect if I were to change my classification from "intermediate" to "beginner "?

I went to the Dell Cd and found 3 video drivers:

1. Part # 0528c atixpert 8mb agp video card driver

2. Part #4911R Dimension LXXXC: Intel 810 video driver

3. Part #630xv Dimension LXXXCX\r: Intel 810 e Video Driver

It appears that they can be extracted to floppies(which I don't know how to do.) However, they are 5 years old and would it not be better to get some new ones?

It would be better to start with the drivers you currently have, they worked before. I would use the 'Intel 810 video driver', as your everest log reports you have an IBM card.
You have stated you can extract to floppies, can you extract to a folder on the drive instead? If so create the folder 'Video', then extract to it.
We'll respect you no matter what you call yourself .

I extracted Intel 810 Video driver from Dell CD to:
c:/Dell/drivers/6214r. It has 89 files.

 

If you are unsure as what to do next, this is how I would handle it. Go to Start\Run and type in Msconfig and press Enter. Click on the Advanced button and put a check next to 'Enable Startup Menu'. Reboot, then select Safe Mode. Then right click on My Computer and select Properties, then click on the Device Manager tab. Remove all entries under Display Adaptor.
Then I would go back into Msconfig, and uncheck the Enable Startup Menu, reboot and let it start windows normally.
When your video card is detected, direct windows to that folder, and your drivers will be installed.

I shut down early yesterday for the ball games. I'm glad Mark took care of your video problem.

With the Dell driver disk you can install the drivers you had when you first bought the computer or you can go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest. It might be best in your case to get everything installed from your driver disk then work on updating in your leisure time.

You should be able to insert your disk and pick install drivers or whatever terminology they may use.

Some Dell user might chime in and tell you exactly how to do a Dell driver disk.

Just hang in there and everything will fall in to place.

 

Now I should ( must ask here ). Not only for the sake of users on here but I have been asked personally. I chickened out and won't try it ( on someone elses' machine any way).

The suggestion I made I know for sure will work on my Home built PC. It is the ONLY way I have installed/repaired/re-installed Windows form 98 on up. Even the repair install of XP was very close to the same.

But will it work on a Dell ( or other OEM ) machine such as the one involved here ?

If the printer is a USB printer, you must install the drivers first. If not, a little problem gets big real fast when you plug it in and windows starts looking for drivers, and they aren't there yet.
If it is a LPT1 or parallel port printer, the method is the same as for the video drivers, just have them handy.

It certainly makes sense to me. My original problem was that I deleted
most of my files using *.* instead of "~*.* ". Then I came here for help and many of my files were empty. I reinstalled Windows on top of the original version. Things were still acting up and the guy at my ISP said to do
a clean install. I've since discovered that he doesn't know much more
about it than I do(A scary thought.)

The printer is working great. I used the original cd that came with it
and didn't install any drivers The Intel 810 Video Driver that you suggested is a much better driver than the original one on the machine: when I tried to update it, the message came up: "Object to be verified is unknown to the trust provider." In the past whenever I have used PC Pit Stop diagnostics, "unusually low vide performance" would always come up. But no more!

It's a joy to be able to use my computer again.
