My computer recently started putting my Outlook Express stuff on the desktop, all in the new file format .dbx. OP's inbox, outbox, and other files were emptied. I'm not sure if OP was otherwise corrupted, or if other programs were effected. Anyone know how this happened? I was able to recover the files with some difficulty, using something called mail navigator. I'd like to know how to avoid this in the future.

In OE, Tools->Options->Maintenance->Folder Store option allows you to move the dbx files to another location.

    chuckbowers--
Actually nothing new about .dbx. That is the standard file type for OE messages. It is only when you save them, that you create .eml files. If you try to open a .dbx file you will see only code.

Something messed up OE. Possibilities include: you moved the store folder from somewhere other than within OE, your comp may have a virus, you may have a damged IE or OE system file, OE hiccup...

Did you have a lot of mail stored in OE? OE was not designed to hold mail. Messages you want to keep should be archived OUTSIDE of OE. To correct the problem, or to ward of future ones, you may want to consider a repair of IE/OE.

There is a wealth of info about OE at this site, and you may want to scroll down and read the section on disappearing folders on this page.
