    This is XP Pro with SP2 installed.

    When I right click on the Start button I get the hour glass. It stays that way until I use taskmanager to shut down explorer.exe and restart it.

    If I try to right click on an entry in the Start menu, the same thing happens.

    Same thing for right clicking on anything in Windows Explorer.

    If I just left click on anything in Windows Explorer then just left click on File it will do same.

    Everything else in Windows is working perfectly. As long as I do not use right click in these places.

    I can drag anything I want to the recycle bin to delete without problems. I do not think this is just a delete problem however.

    I tried to run Repair last night and all worked well until it got to the screen that starts the install then I get an error saying something about SXS.dll and some file in,

    cd:\I386\asms\10\msfx\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man

    In line 4.

    Here is the contents of that file,

    ---start---
    <?xml version= "1.0" encoding= "UTF-8" standalone= "yes "?>
    <assembly xmlns= "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion= "1.0 ">
    <assemblyIdentity type= "win32" name= "Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus" version= "1.0.2600.2180" processorArchitecture= "x86" publicKeyToken= "6595b64144ccf1df "/>
    <file name= "GdiPlus.dll" hash= "7c911766c2ebe993a520bbd53395d9cd5b115271" hashalg= "SHA1 "/>
    </assembly>
    ---end---

    I have XP Pro and SP2 slipstreamed as per instructions from here,

    http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html

    I tried running SFC /scannow and that failed as well with some error. I forget
    that now but can run again if someone thinks it important.

    Oh and the reason I do not have the error log after running the repair is that
    I was unable to get back into XP. It just started the setup process over each
    time I would try to boot into XP. I did a restore using Acronis Trueimage so
    I lost the error logs.

    Anyone have an idea what I might to do fix this?

    Another thing to try is to disable DEP, viz :-
    If you are getting errors on different applications including Explorer after installing SP2, you can use this fix. Even if your computer is running OK you will get a little better performance. It seems to be a memory protection issue with the new DEP system provided with SP2. If you disable DEP your problems may go away. Most systems don't have hardware support for DEP but it is enabled as default.

    To view the DEP setting via Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab, Performance Settings, Data Execution Prevention.

    To fix it you have to change the boot.ini file. The easiest way is via Control Panel, System, Advanced, Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery. Now the Edit button under System Startup and change /NoExecute=OptIn to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff. Save the boot.ini file and OK your way out. Reboot the computer. Now when you view the DEP setting, it will be greyed out. It is reversible by changing the boot.ini file back to the original.

    BurrWalnut,

    Thanks very much for your help. I do not really see anything there that might help me with this problem.

    another way to have resolved this would be using shellexview to remove third party shell extensions until you figured out that it was PGP at fault.

    Well it seems this is not quite fixed after all. Disabling the PGP service only lets the right click menu work on the Start menu.

    In Windows Explorer when you right click on any dirve the hour glass still comes up. Have to shut down WE via the taskmanager.

    Yes, thats the utility i recommend. Go in there and disable stuff. There are lots of approaches. You can disable everything thats not microsoft, or do a binary search elimination.

    Joe,

    Thanks that seems to have fixed it. There were two PGP items in there that ware now showing up in Services.

    Disabled them and so far so good. :)
