This is related to another problem that I had. The Switch
I have and old 400mhx ATX PC that had 98 on it. I blew this out and installed XP Pro. Now when I click Shutdown or Turn Off it does not turn off the PC. The only way other than pulling the plug is to press reset then when the video comes back on press the power switch. Also in the advanced tab of the power options I don't have options for the power buttons. I was hoping there is an option somewhere that is not checked. Any Ideas?

    Ron,
does it get to the "It is now safe ..." screen and stays there?

In Power options > Hibernate, is the box to Activate hibernation checked?
If so, try unchecking that box, it has done the trick on some older equipment I have had the privlege to "work on ".

    Yes, that is what happens.

    No, this in not checked.

And yes it sure is a privilege to work on old PC. Doing a friend a favor never goes unpunished. I am so frustrated with this!

    Suggestion

    Oldsalty...

For what it's worth, you may want to check the power scheme settings in bios, this compact deskpro I'm running will act precisely that way if power control is not set to at least minimal in bios....

    cheers
