    dead laptop - other problem

I, too, am dealing with a "dead" laptop issue of sorts.

I have a Compaq Presario 1700 (running crappy WinME) that managed to get infected with a trojan virus. While being distracted during the fix process, I managed to completely mess this machine up by running a system restore. So after showing a successful restore, I reboot to find out that a .dll file is missing, and get that lovely "white box" error message saying explorer.exe cannot be loaded, and to reinstall Windows.
(Note: Distraction during computer repair is bad, mmmkay? The first step in the trojan fix is "DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE ". grrr)

So now I'm trying to transfer my data/files off the laptop hard drive onto my desktop, so I can try to either run the Recovery CD that Compaq provided, or run fdisk and install WinXP instead.

I have an IDE hard drive adapter to hook the laptop hard drive up to my desktop via slave IDE cable. However...I'm having NO LUCK in getting my desktop to recognize it. For reference, the slave IDE cable is a 39-pin, as well as the laptop hard drive & the IDE adapter. Everything is 39-pin instead of 40.

Suggestions??? It's a MUST to recover the data/files from the laptop hard drive...I mean seriously, my marriage basically depends on it!

    THANKS!

    -k

kedalia - Welcome to the Board :)

I have split your post to a new thread - never a good idea to tack onto the end of an older thread, especially when the problem is somewhat different.

Well, if your marriage depends upon it, I can offer little help. Suggest you consult that recent divorcee living in the big house up on the hill with all three cars in the driveway - get her lawyers name and get it now. Don't worry about the computer.

Now, as to your 39 pin adapter? What have you been smoking?

To run a laptop drive in a desktop, you'll need a 40 to 44 pin adapter which also includes a molex connector. Anything less and you are soon to be single. Should cost you all of $3 - much less than your impending legal fees.

    ;)

Santa's philosophy of "checking it twice" really helps out in some situations...

...as in, checking connections twice! I think the molex connector wasn't in all the way.

I posted that message from work yesterday, went home last night to try it again, and it's recognized! It takes what seems like FOREVER for it to see the data to copy it over...

Now maybe my husband won't kill me afterall!

Hope you did something with that trojan before you started copying data. Glad to hear that you are once again, a champion of matrimonial bliss.
