Yesterday I received a Netscape 7.2 disc. After installation from the disc onto my computer, it failed to function when I clicked on the desktop icon. This is the same result when I downloaded 7.2. What have I done wron Why is 7.2 different from 7.01 which I removed before installation of 7.2.

Operating system is WIN98, processor speed 233, Gateway computer. Memory is 160.

    Thanks

    Welcome to the Forum, Indycolt!

    Hi Indycolt,

I would try to remove, and then reinstall Netscape 7.2 again. Follow this procedure:

Close Netscape, Quick Launch, and all programs running in the background
    Uninstall Netscape 7.2, using Add/Remove

Delete the Netscape folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape folder
You may want to save your plugins folder before deleting the Netscape folder
If you are running Communicator, then delete the second Netscape folder

Delete the 1.7.2_2004080415 folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.7.2_2004080415
If you have no other versions of Netscape or Mozilla installed, then delete the entire mozilla.org folder.

    REBOOT YOUR PC

Now install Netscape 7.2 again, and see if it will start.

    Defective NS 7.2 disc

I have followed your instructions for the installation of NS 7.2 with the same results as before. Netscape 7.2 is defective and does not function on my system.

I have had Netscape 7.01 on my system. I removed it and tried to install NS 7.2 several times even following your procedures. I am concluding that NS7.2 is defective and probably is not that much better than my NS 7.01 which I have on a disc.

Thank you for all your help, but if there are other suggestions, I would apprecieate them.

Another attempt at installing NS 7.2 from disc

Ramona, I still need help. Several attempts have failed

2I am still unable to install and run Netscape 7.2 from a purchased disc on a WIN 98 computer. I have removed all previous NS versions, removed GRE file, Netscape file and saved plugins. I inactivated Norton antivirus and then installed 7.2 by inactivating background programs except Explorer and Systray. I rebooted and NS 7.2 still fails to respond when you click the icon.

    What gives?

    Indycolt,

I would download Netscape from this site: ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.2/windows/win32/sea/
    Download the NSSetup-Full.exe file.

It could be that the disk is defective, or the install file is corrupt. If you have no Netscape or Mozilla installed, you have deleted the GRE folder and Netscape Program folder, then Netscape should run. I can think of no other reason why it should not, especially in view of the fact that this is on Windows 98.

Remove all the files/folders in C:\WINDOWS\Temp before installing Netscape 7.2.

    Netscape 7.2 problems

    Ramona:

Thanks for your help again, but I still am unable to install NS 7.2. Originally I downloaded NS 7.2 from the site you posted. In fact, I did it three times. Every download failed to function, thus I ordered the NS 7.2 CD. The CD, as seen here in my posts, also failed to function when clicking the installed desktop icon.

I have almost come to the conclusion that the Netscape 7.2 browser program is defective. I will return to the Netscape 7.01 browser which I have on a CD (downloaded onto a CD). At least it works and is probably almost as good as the 7.2.

But, any new ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your patience.

    Indycolt,

There is nothing wrong with Netscape 7.2, and it is definitely not defective, as thousands of people are using the program. I can't know what is wrong on your end, as I can't look over your shoulder. If you followed my reply #2, 6th September 2004, 15:27, then Netscape 7.2 should be working... I have no other workarounds or tips to give you.

    Sorry,

    Ramona

    Ramona,

Thanks for your help just the same. Really, I am happy with NS7.01, but just wanted to see if 7.2 was better.

Now, just a couple of questions since I may not be following your instructions exactly.

    1. When you say "save plugins ", I just delete them into the Trash and Restore them after I supposedly install. Is there a better way to save plugins?

    2. When installing the new NS 7.2 program, I always shut down all background programs running using the three finger salute method. I neve remove EXPLORER AND SYSTRAY, but remove everything else. Is that the proper method to install?

Take your time answering. I await your answers.

    Hi Indycolt,

    1. Create a Backup folder on your HD, and use it for your plugins folder. Do a copy/paste and that way you won't have to do any reinstalling. The Backup folder could also be used for your frequent Profile folder backups. You do this don't you? ;) Take a look here: Preventive Browser Maintenance.

    2. You're right on, in doing a CTRL+ALT+DEL, and leaving only Explorer and Systray enabled.

I am a little confused or maybe ignorant about just what you mean by:
" 1. Create a Backup folder on your HD, and use it for your plugins folder. Do a copy/paste and that way you won't have to do any reinstalling. "

Where does the Backup folder go on the HD? Do you mean for me to just copy/paste existing plugins into this folder? If I need these programs after installation, how are they integrated back into the system?

    Sorry about the confusion.

    Indycolt,

    Open Windows Explorer
In the left panel, click on C: so that it is highlighted
In the right panel, right click in a blank space, and from the menu select:
    New | Folder
A blue pulsing text field will appear, next to a blank folder
Type the name you wish to give the backup folder, in the text field
    Close Windows Explorer, then reopen
You will see the folder you created in the left pane, listed in alpha order

For the sake of example say that you named the folder "Backup" and it is in place
Now, navigate to your plugins folder
Right click the plugins folder in the left panel
    Select: "Copy "
Navigate to the "Backup" folder, right click, select: "Paste "

You have just backed up your plugins folder. Note: you copy the folder, and not just files.

Once you have installed an updated browser, then move the plugins back to the C:\Program Files\Netscape folder
Windows will ask if you wish to replace the existing folder, and you will answer YES.

Let us know if you have more questions.

    Ramona,

Thanks for all the help. I have no other questions. You seem awfully busy answering questions on all your forums.

I will attempt to use all your instructions to install NS 7.2 eventually, but not now. I am happy with NS 7.01 at this time and am a little leary about NS 7.2 at this time.

    Thoughtfullyl
