I have clean installed WIN98SE on a Gateway computer which has a Pentium Motherboard and Celeron 333 Mhz Processor. I have returned this computer to the owner so I don't have immediate access to it and I'm not sure of the model number. I have EV700 scribbled on a note but I THINK that is the monitor and I also have G6-333C written down. All of the Critical Updates have been installed and the computer is using IE 6. I checked Adobe and could not decide if 6.0.1 would mess up this installation or if maybe an older version was required. I'm hardware challenged and do not understand the difference between Intel Pentium processor and Pentium-class processor so hope someone can tell me what I need.

    June,

On an oldish PC like that I would go for Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 rather than 6.01 which is a resource hogging program. 5.1 will undoubredly do all your friend wants.

I would feel sure that both versions would work OK on Pentium or Celeron (a cut down Pentium)

Thanks Pete C - I always get an answer promptly to my questions at this excellent site!

This was my first time attempting to use FDISK and FORMAT and I was quite pleased when all went well on this very old computer after I had tried unsuccessfully all of the tricks I knew to get it to work. This computer belongs to my son who lives nearby and I warned him that the computer might never run again after I messed with it. Needless to say he was quite impressed that someone older than dirt could actually fix it and I didn't want to lose my good image by installing something that would not work. Thanks again.

Well done :) - if your 'street cred' gets dented by Adobe - blame me :D:D

    Thank you Welshjim.

I went to the site BUT all it asked for was Language, Platform and Connection Speed and then offered to download 6.0.1. As Adobe does not know the hardware is six years old I doubt that is the right thing to do.

    Hi June...

If you want to get older versions of Adobe Reader go to => http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=acrobat. They have versions 2 through to 5.0.5.

FYI...At work we have installed, as Pete suggested, Adobe Reader 5.1 on P333 Celerons with 64 MB RAM. We did find that anything older than that version 4.0 worked the best...it has less overhead than versions 5 and up.

June--Here are the requirements for using Reader 6.0.1
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrsystemreqs.html#60win
If you meet those, Adobe is saying you should be OK. Note that the version of IE also enters the equation. And if Adobe says you can handle the update v6.0.2 then download that after you install 6.0.1.
You can get older versions directly from Adobe here
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/reader_archive.html
However, unless you are keen Reader user, you probably will also be happy with v 5.1 as well.
Up to you. The age of the PC is not the issue.

This old computer is used briefly each day with a dial up connection to check E-mail, eBay, Google or perhaps check a repair manual. He prefers to use my faster internet connection and newer computer when he has the time. The old Gateway runs IE 6 okay but it sounds like the best choice for Adobe will be 5.1. His hard drive is the original 6.4 GB but when I finished installing the basic stuff he wanted only 553 MB was being used and it run much better than before. I did not know the version of Internet Explorer had anything to do with the choice for Adobe. So many things to attempt to learn and so little time....

Thanks to everyone for the help!

My son is self-employed, works a lot of hours each week and has little free time. When he couldn't get the old computer to work I printed several pages of instructions concerning how to do a clean install of WIN98SE I had saved from somewhere and gave it to him. He read it and told me "I really do not understand very much of this...I guess I will just have to buy a new computer ". I asked him if he would let me play with the old computer before he replaced it. I'm sure he could have done a clean install if he had all of the extra time I have...it's nice to be retired and have nothing to do but play all day!
