I just recently went from version 7.1 to version 7.2 of netscape. I should have done a little research first as I have had a few problems. I have gotten everything working except that when I make a change to my mail preferences then exit and go back into them the changes have not been saved. I am by far not an expert and any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jim

    Welcome to the Forum, skeeter!

    Hi Jim,

What changes have you made in the Mail & Newsgroups settings, the ones which aren't being retained?

Did you first uninstall Netscape 7.1, or did you keep 7.1 and install Netscape 7.2 in a separate directory?

If you uninstalled Netscape 7.1, did you also remove the GRE folder for Netscape 7.1?

Did you install Netscape 7.1 over Netscape 7.2? We also need to know what OS you are running.

    Thanks,

    Ramona

    Operating system etc

    Ramona:

Thanks for the welcome. I wish I had known about this site before I upgraded.
The changes which are not being saved are in composition and addressing. I would like to change to automatically quote the original message when replying and I would like to start my reply above the quote. I did not do an uninstall of 7.1 nor did I do my install in a separate directory Since I did not do the uninstall I also did not remove the GRE folder for netscape 7.1 I apparently just installed 7.2 right over the top of 7.1. This created some very interesting problems. I spent a while working on those issues and used some of the answers you had already posted here to clean up most of my issues.
I am on Windows 2000 5.00.2195 service pack 4. Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.

    Jim

    Hi skeeter,

In the older versions of Netscape you could get away with installing an upgrade over an existing version, but no longer... There are files in the newer versions which conflict with the existing files.

You will need to uninstall through Add/Remove. If both Netscape 7.1 and Netscape 7.2 are both listed in Add/Remove, DON'T uninstall 7.1. Select Netscape 7.2, and both versions will then be uninstalled. If you try to uninstall 7.1 first you will get an error that there is no uninstall log. Netscape 7.2 removes the files necessary to uninstall 7.2

Once you have uninstalled 7.2, then reboot your PC.

    Next:
Delete the GRE folder for both Netscape 7.1 and Netscape 7.2
    They are located here: C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE

Delete the Netscape folder - save your plugins folder if you have added plugins
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape

Now install Netscape 7.2, and you should be up and running. None of the install/unstall will have any effect on your Profile.

    Ramona still need your help

I walked through each of the processes as described and Netscape seems to work, but it still will not allow me to save any changes to my mail setings. Any other thoughts or ideas that I might try. Hopefully I did not foul things up too much by trying to install over 7.1. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Skeeter,
I had a long reply for you, and, then I did the usual, i.e. knock myself out of the website, and lose everything. I am sorry for bringing up the obvious, so you had the reply above or below. Now, it is only Inline or as an Attachment, at least for Moz1.7.3. And, the other about saving addresses? The Inline and in collected addresses are default. I will have to see what 7.2 looks like.
It is possible that your profile is mixed up, and that another problem, altogether.

    Hi Jim,

If you went through the entire process as provided, then your settings should be saved. I don't know what is going on with your setup.

I have changed the "reply above/below quoted text" several times, without having to shut down Netscape, or close Mail & Newsgroups. The setting is retained each time. I have completely disabled the setting with no problem.

You are saying, that when you reply to a message, the setting you have chosen, "Reply above/below quoted..." does not kick in, correct?

I did it again! This is what happens when I have to go to Mail, and check the settings. Anyway, what I found out, and I was not aware of it, is that while all the reply settings in 7.1 are in the Preferences, part of the settings for 7.2 are in the Mail Settings|Composition and Addressing.
So, one sets the general settings in in the Preferences|Composition to either Inline or Attachment, and the more detailed setting is in each account in Composition and Addressing
So, I have to be thankful for the question, and I hope that this works.
I create a new profile for each major upgrade, so I would not be affected, just confused. Are we understanding each other?

Ramona and Westside Got it working,

I went back through each of the steps you recommended Ramona and I still could not get the changes to save. So as a last gasp effort I decided to try deleting and recreating the mail account within mail and newsgroups settings. Believe it or not I got lucky and it seems to have worked. I guess I should have tried that the first time. I do think that installing over the old version difinitely was creating some of the problem as I had already tried creating new mail accounts earlier before going through the recommended processes and it had not worked. Thank you both very very much. I really appreciate it. I was beginning to give up hope that I would ever get Netscape working properly.

    Thanks Again

    Jim

Way to go skeeter! I know you must be relieved to have your settings working as they should.
