If you want to keep your existing data you need a ME to XP "upgrade" cd.

You will need a XP CD with the valid cd key. This does not mean you can use your neighbor's copy and use his key. Once installed, you will have 30 days to activate your copy of XP.

Generally, it is better to do a clean format when upgrading from a Win9.x OS to XP. You will lose all data on the HDD if you do so.

But you can use Windows XP's File and Settings Transfer Wizard to transfer your files & settings.

Have to disagree with you Steve. Any XP CD can be used to upgrade AFAIK. The difference is how XP is installed: whether as an upgrade or a new install.

As an aside, an XP cd labeled "upgrade" is the full OS but requires a previous copy of any Windows - 95 to ME - before it allows the clean install.

    Hi ziller,

Re-read you're first post and want to clarify this point: Can I use any XP install CD?. Yes, as long as it's a pro version of XP. Think that's what you meant, but want to make sure.

Windows comes labeled as either a "full" retail copy or labeled as an "upgrade ". Either one can be used to upgrade ME to XP, in your case Pro. The difference is first one of price - the "upgrade" is cheaper - and then as I indicated, proof of a previous version of Windows - in the form of a ME disc for example - is required with the "upgrade" XP when doing a clean install.

I have done both an upgrade and a clean install from ME to XP, in my case XP Home.

I would highly recomend doing a clean install - but if the current ME installation is problem free, then by all means do the upgrade. ME being problem free is very important though, because otherwise you're running the risk of simply carrying problems over.

Instructions for a clean XP install:

http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/setup.html !!! Clean Install of XP

    Regards - Charles

    ME upgrade

Thanks Charles for the clarification. I have an ME machine but no disk and it is trouble free. I do have an XP pro CD with the key.
As I understand your note I can use my XP CD to upgrade my ME system without losing any data from my ME installation.
    Thanks Charles
