I need to enable DMA on my XP machine, and the Plextor Manual says that there's an Advanced tab if I double click the controller (master secondary in this case) I am using.
I don't have an Advanced tab on either controllers?
    This is an 845 chipset.
Am I the only one without an Advanced tab in the IDE Controllers area of the Device Manager? If so, any ideas on how to activate it??
    Thanks so much,
    Michael

While in Device Manager click on System Devices and verify DMA device usage is enabled.
There is no advanced properties designation, but from the general tab for the secondary controller, the channel can be enabled or not enabled.

Thanks for the helpful replies. It confirms that the advanced tab is missing on my XP machine.
After much searching as to why I have come to the conclusion that it was lost after upgrading the Plextor firmware.
I suppose the only way now to get that tab back is to reinstall the OS.
By looking at the settings information provided by the Intel Application Accelerator; DMA IS turned on, so I am just leaving it for now.
I'll never upgrade the firmware on XP again!!
I still can't figure out though why I get bufferunderuns using the BRANDNEW Plextor 40x12x40 with Smartburn activated.
    Thanks again,
    Michael

    plextor

    This copied over from Plextor...........
I would consider offing Roxio & installing Nero 5.5

Plextor Included Software: The software we currently ship with our drives is not XP compatible. Here is the status:

Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0x Basic:
Roxio has released an update for Easy CD Creator 5.0x Basic to add Windows XP compatibility. Click here to link to Roxio's upgrade page.
    Plextor Manager 2000:
Plextor Manager 2000 is not XP compatible. To avoid potential system problems, please DO NOT install Plextor Manager 2000 when running Windows XP.
    CD Res-Q 1.53:
CD Res-Q does not support a NTFS file system created by Windows XP, however, a FAT32 file system created by Windows XP is supported when booting to DOS with CD-ROM drive-letter access.
    :)

Wise words Rancher! At first I didn't install the Roxio that come with the Plextor, but rather my Paid for versio of Nero 5.5.80. Sad to say Nero hasn't done it's homework for the Plextor 40x12x40 because I get bufferunderuns using Nero (Plextor can't explain it even though burn proof is enabled automatically in Nero) while the Roxio 5.1.1 which is shipped with works great??!! And it's XPable!! Though I prefer Nero, I must hope that the next version will work better with this Plextor drive.

    cdburners & software

Nero 5.5.2.2 works great in xp. I have the Liteon 16X & 24X & now the 40X. All but the 40X worked no matter what. I researched Liteon & found that with certain chipsets the new Nero 5.5.5x.x was not reliable. Sure nuf ain't. Put the 40X in the wifes old k6-3/450 w/via mvp3 chipset & it works with any software, darnit I lost that burner to HER:eek: My main box is IWILLXP333 w/alimagic chipset. I'm not sure if the plextor wants the dma checked! Think I read somewhere it's driver disables this feature. My last plextor was 12X:)

My my how funny life can be. I too have the LiteOn 24x and that thing is ROCK solid with Nero. I just loaned out my other BX machine with the Plextor 12x and that too is Rock solid with Nero. I have to assume that its simply this particular burner, the Plextor 40x that just doesnt' like Nero 5.5.8?? I am glad it likes the Roxio, but I don't. Sometimes our best friends were once distrusted foes and I'd like to think that those brainiacs in Germany will rectify this Nero vs Plextor fued and all will be happy!! (They best do it before version 6 so I don't have to pay for the upgrade:D
    Nice talkin at ya
