Mozilla was working just fine and than I had to reinstalled Windows 2000 Professional and than I couldn't open Mozilla anymore. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled in maybe 6 times which didn't change anything and I still can't open it. Even after uninstalling it I removed all traces of Mozilla in the registry and in my OS and that didn't help. In the past I have had this problem with other browsers and it was due to the fact that the browser lost its home page. Can this be the problem here? If so how do I get in to create a home page for the browser? I am open to any and all suggestions since I really like the browser and have used it for maybe six months with no problems. Thanks

    Welcome to the Forum, RDOC2!

    Hi RDOC2,

What version of Mozilla are you using? When you uninstalled Mozilla, reinstalled, removed all Registry Keys and files from W2K, did you also remove the GRE folder for Mozilla, and the mozilla.org folder in Program Files?

The GRE folder is located in:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.xx_2004xxxxxx
    (depending on your version)

The other mozilla.org folder is located in:
    C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla

Did you then reboot your PC after you uninstall Mozilla, and deleted the above folders? This is very important...

When you restart the PC also delete all files in the C:\WINDOWS\temp folder before reinstalling Mozilla.

Ok I got it to work fine and all was great. During the install I said it was ok to report errors. A little later Mozilla crashed and it started to report the error and I cancelled the reporting. Now Mozilla opens a blank window and it says the connection was refused when attempting to contact Mozilla.org. How do I fix this and do away with the error reporting? Thanks

    RDOC2,

Do a "Windows Find" for fullsoft.dll
    When found, delete the file
Next: do a "Find" for talkback
When found, delete the files (I recall that there are 3)

That will get rid of the error reporting, and crashes. If you will do a "Custom Install" you will have the option to opt out of this feature, and others.

In Edit | Preferences | Navigator
Enable the radio button next to "Blank Page "
Remove the path in the "Home Page" field

If you want to start Mozilla with a specific page, then enter the page URL in the "Home Page" field. Then enable the radio button next to "Home Page "

I start with a blank page, as it reduces startup time. As you can see, if the site is down, or busy, it hangs your startup.

Thanks for helping me. I followed your directions and I still get the message,
"the connection was refused." What do you suggest? I deleted talk back and fullsoft and uninstalled without rebooting and than did a custom install. Next did the preferrences for a blank page.
Also now I can even connect to the internet with Internet Explorer which I could do until now? Help
Ok I rebooted and everything is working like it should. Let me say thank you and your help is really appreciated and you really know your stuff. What does the inspector do? I didn't enabled it in the custom insulation.

I have had connection refused at two sites, since late last night. This was the first. Real.com was the second, this morning. Obviously, I am here, and realcom connects ok. I wish that they would use something nicer than "refused connection ", like "I don't have a clue "

I don't believe this. When I try to send an email I am now getting the error that "Sending of message failed, couldn't connect to the server, smtp.comcast.net" check that your settings for mail account are correct or the server maybe down. The server isn't down since I can send mail using another computer with the same settings. Also my settings are correct? Boy this is a buggy program. In the past Mozilla never gave me a minutes worth of trouble. Need your help again. The good part is the computer isn't crashing since our last fix. Ok here is more information. I have two profiles setup here and I can send mail in one profile but not in the other profile. So what must I do to be able to send in both profiles.

    RDOC2,

In Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    Click on the "Advanced" tab
Is Comcast listed as follows: smtp.comcast.net (Default)

Are there any other entries, or blank lines before Comcast? If so delete them.

    Close Mozilla and Quick Launch
    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to your *.slt (salted) folder
    Open the Mail\mailaccount folder
    Delete the sent.msf folder
DON'T delete the sent folder with no extension, as it contains your sent messages.

Let us know if any of the above helps.

    Thanks!
I have answered your questions below. None of the above helped. What do you suggest next?

In Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    Click on the "Advanced" tab
Is Comcast listed as follows: smtp.comcast.net (Default)
I have two entries one is smtp.comcast.net and the other is always use the default server.

Are there any other entries, or blank lines before Comcast? If so delete them.
No other entries or blank lines.

    Close Mozilla and Quick Launch
    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to your *.slt (salted) folder
    Open the Mail\mailaccount folder
    Delete the sent.msf folder
Ok I changed the name of that folder to xxxsent.slt

DON'T delete the sent folder with no extension, as it contains your sent messages.

Let us know if any of the above helps.

Select: Always Use the Default Server instead of smtp.comcast.net

I hope you mean that you change the name of the folder to xxxsent.MSF

    One other workaround:
Move all message in your Sent (without the MSF extension) to a temporary folder.
    Close Mozilla and Quick Launch
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to your *.slt folder
Delete or rename both the sent & sent.msf folders

    Start Netscape
Are you able to send now?

Ramona I did as you said in your last respond but it didn't help. What is our next step. I also rebooted before trying it.

    Clear the Location Bar field
Type this text in the blank field: about:config
In the blank "filter" field type this text: mail.smtpservers
Highlight the setting, and right click
If there are duplicate SMTP servers, then select: modify
Remove the duplicates and close the window
    Exit Mozilla
This edit will now appear in the prefs.js file
Always back up the prefs.js file before editing.

    You might also try this:

Add a fake SMTP server and make it the default. This will allow you to delete the problematic SMTP Server. Remove them all, and re-start Netscape. Then re-enter the real server data, and make the "real server" the default, then remove your fake server.

Then if none of the above help, call Comcast.

If no help there then Create a New Profile. See this guideline for Creating a New Profile

I would like to make sure that we understand each other. I had mentioned specific websites, but, at least now, you are bringing up a mail problem. This is entirely different, unless Comcast started requiring authentication. I have seen Comcast acknowledging the existance of post-4.8 Netscapes, although they are not supporting Look here
You mentioned bugginess with Moz1.7.3. I found the same, but I tried to reproduce other people's setups, who do not use new profiles. It took me a good week to tame the beast, and I think that I had to create a new profile.
So, if you are using a "used" profile, you will have problems, sooner or later. Guaranteed.

Ok none of the above worked for me. How can I add a fake server, where can I type it in?
Comcast won't help unless it is Internet Explorer. Ok I can create a new profile but how can I transfer the folders from the non working profile to the new one. Now if the old one doesn't work isn't that a sign that it is corrupt and if I move those folders to the new profile won't it corrupt that one? I am still in there fightning so hang in with me please. Thanks and I really appreciate the help.

My second profile is the default one and I can send mail from it so if we could move the folders from the none working one that would be great or are we better off just making a new profile?

I have another computer on the network that has the nonworking profile on it and it works just find and I can send mail from it. Should we try to move it to the computer where it doesn't work? As you can see I am open to all suggestions. Thanks

Westside I must agree with you but I installed it on two computers and one I had no problems and the other has been just unreal to the point that it kept crashing my computer.

    RDOC2,

    Fake Server:

    Open Mail & NG
Edit | Mail & NG Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)

In the Server Name field type in something like: SMTP.someisp.invalid
    OR
If you decide to create a new Profile, see this guideline which I referenced earlier: Creating a New Profile

Don't copy the working Profile to the Non working profile. Sharing a Profile is poison to Mozilla... You will be much better off creating a new Profile. You won't be copying the corrupt files to the new Profile. The files to copy and NOT copy are listed in the guideline for creating a new Profile.

We aren't going to desert you, promise. ;)

You said "Open Mail & NG
Edit | Mail & NG Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)

In the Server Name field type in something like: SMTP.someisp.invalid "

Ok when I go to Mail & NG Account Settings it has the server name which has the incoming mail (mail.comcast.net) and than I select advanced and there it shows always use default server and smtp.comcast.net but there is no way to edit them? I will give the new profile a try.

You can surely edit the Outgoing Server(SMTP) from Advanced. You can add a smtp.comcast.net, which you seem to be missing, and then refer to that from the specific account server settings Advanced.
How you got a wacky SMTP, I do not know but you don't have to keep it.

I must be missing something? There is no way I can edit the advanced/server which is smtp and Always use the default server. The only way I can edit is by starting a new profile. Can someone be more specific or try it on their setup and you can see what I am saying. Thanks
