I've been usng Netscape 7.2 the past couple of weeks, and so far, I haven't seen any improvements on Netscape 7.1. It's about the same, after I've tweaked most of the settings to get it the way I like.

I have found one big deterioration however. In NS 7.1, I used to be able to select a word or phrase, right click on it, and launch a web search for it using Google. If I do the same with NS 7.2, it searches using Netscape search, which is completely useless. Edit>preferences>internet search only allows you to select Netscape Search.

What's going on here? Is NS 7.2 really a regression? Should I reinstall NS 7.1?

I wish that they would give more information to the users, but AOL will not tell, if it wants to use the Netscape search engine.
I solved the Search engine dilemma in two ways. First of all I have a button in my Personal Toolbar, but since you don't want to use the engine to do a plain search, independent of anything in the browser, there is to answer your question You will have search engines coming out of your ears.

    Westside, fantastic! Thanks.

I followed your link, and did have search engines coming out of my ears. I clicked on one of them (under Geeral - google.com), and Google appeared in the list in Edit>Preferences>Internet Search, I selected it, wuit Netscape and then openedit it again, and it works! I guess I won't have to reinstall NS 7.1 after all.

    xelaw,

Since I don't particularly like extensions, this is how I added Search Engines to Netscape 7.2:

Copied the contents of the "search plugins" folder before uninstalling Netscape 7.1
    OR
If you have Mozilla installed you can copy the contents of its "search plugins" folder. The files are similar to this:
    dmoz.gif
    dmoz.src
    google.gif
    google.src
    jeeves.gif
    jeeves.src

    Thanks, Ramona

Unfortunately, I had already uninstalled NS 7.1 before I realized that I didn't have the complete search capability.

Any particular reason that you don't like extensions?

I don't know Ramona's reason, but I can say, by experience, that extentions are add-ons which may have deleterious effect. There are few extentions which need to be added to NS7.2, and, they they have been thoroighly tested.
I like the Home button, but while the extention seems to be harmless, the website does funny things to my system. I have 7.1 and 7.2, well separated, and 7.2 is default. I visited the site twice, and in each case, the default had reverted to 7.1. I have also used the Prefbar, http://prefbar.mozdev.org/ which adds functionality and convenience, and the wheel mouse Autoscroll.
The problem is when the extentions cannot be uninstalled, eaily enough.

    xelaw,

I don't like extensions, as Westside mentions, they often create havoc with the browser. I like my browser as lean and mean as I can get it! ;) The only one I use with Firefox and Mozilla, is SpellBound, which allows you to spell check text areas, i.e., BBS posts, etc.

I myself used tips Ramona had posted on here website for changing the default Netscape search to use Google instead....

    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns72TBhack.html

    *** Edit ***

I haven't tried it yet. I've made the changes to my browser, but I haven't closed my browser out and restarted it yet to see if it works.

Just closed my browser to test it out. It works perfectly. However, one side note. You should close Netscape out before trying to make those changes to the netscapetoolbar.rdf file. If you leave Netscape open, it saves the current settings to the file when you exit... thereby overwriting the changes you just made.

The other thing you can do is edit the file and make your changes, but don't save the changes.... leave the file open.... close Netscape. Once Netscape is fully closed, save the file. Now open up netscape and you can use the Netscape Search toolbar to search from Google.
