I posted the following thread at the DVD Shrink Forums
Anyone here had a "new problem" come up since SP2 install?

    Hi Folks
Recently getting a DVD burner, have successful burned 30+ DVD movies via DVD Shrink and Nero 6 Ultra. Also have burned a dozen DVD data disks / Nero 6 backing up media files along with other important computer files.
Using DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 and Nero 6 with current updates. Have NOT MADE ONE COASTER - ALL Disks work fine. Have been using 2 different brands of disks.
    ------------------ Then --------------------
Tuesday of this week applied SP2 on XP Home Edition. The update went very smooth... start to finish in 29 minutes. Computer ran fine before and runs fine after the upgrade.
Last night went to copy my first DVD movie since upgrading to SP2. DVD Shrink worked flawlessly, loaded the file to powerDVD and played perfectly. Put in a new blank DVD, set DVD Shrink to turn computer off at completion, started the burn and went to bed. This morning tried to play the burned movie with powerDVD, after a minute of read activity on the CD/DVD/burner/ player, powerDVD "ended" the session. Tried playing disk on my self standing external DVD player.. "This type of disk can not be played. Went into NeroHistory.log to see if anything showed up. From my very first burn to last night, Nero reported a "successful burn" for ALL burns. It also inbeds the drivers available at the time of the burn. They were the same drivers with same version dates for my first burn to last night's burn, so SP2 did not change any drivers. SOooo, did I simply make my first coaster? Anyone having any new problems since moving to XP / SP2?

Have had ONE response so far ....

You don't say what media you are using but the more burns you do the more likely you are to have a coaster as no media is perfect, maybe you should try another burn and see if the problem occurs again ?

    Thanks for your interest alboy

You don't say what media you are using
TDK (4x) and Fujifilm (8x) ... My burner is 8X, but never have been able to record past 4x.

maybe you should try another burn and see if the problem occurs again ?
Futher research, I found my new burner's "firmware" was version 028. The current version is version 328... which means it is the 3rd revision of firmware version 028. So I installed the firmware update. Did my 2nd burn using my other brand of successful media disks. The same results occured, powerDVD or my external player can NOT read the disk. Well at least I'm batting 1000. Before SP2, 100% successful burns. After SP2, 100% coasters.

    Dennis,
Not familiar with DVD Shrink but... have you updated Nero? There was an update for Nero released a couple weeks ago to make it SP2 compatible. If you haven't downloaded and installed it already you can get it HERE .

I do thank you for your interest "Mr B "
When I installed the burner, I updated. Immediately before and immediately after installing SP2, I checked for Nero updates, but it was current. Most of the thread posters show some type of "error condtion" (see 1st post Links)... I show no errors. Just can't burn a readable video type DVD. Going to burn a music CD (.cda file type) using Nero. Hopefully won't make a coaster. Have not made a CD coaster since installing new burner a year ago. The burner it replace constantly made coasters.
Again thank you Mr. B for your interest. Enjoy the holiday week end.

    Dennis,
Hope you get it sorted. I just finished installing SP2, guess I better put Nero on the list of things to check. :D So far everything seems to be working alright. This computer has always behaved well, would hate to make a mess of it now.
You have a good holiday too.

Made my first music CD with Nero Express / post SP2. Worked like a charm. No problems, disk reads / played fine. But as many "video burning enthusiasts" say, CD type burns are childs play when compared to video burning. Could become interesting if "image backups" for HD's become influenced by SP2 updates.

Like Dennis above, I have the same problem apart from the fact that my DVD copies will play on my PC's PikaOne DVDRW-IDE1008 drive.

Well I have not found a solution to the Nero DVD burning problem, but I did try another software program DVD XCopy Platinum with it's own burning software and guess what, no problems. Plays perfectly on my PC and standalone DVD. My DVD player is a Pacific 1002W and it has a great reputation for playing discs. I plan on trying Power Producer today to see if that has any problems post SP2 install.

I actually used the Nero burnt DVD movie (the one that wont play on my standalone) as my original copy for DVD XCopy to copy onto another disc, and that then works in my standalone. This leads me to believe that Nero is doing everything right apart from setting a certain parameter on the disc to make it playable on certain DVD players. What that parameter is I don't know. Like you I can still use Nero to burn audio CDs and also data discs but I guess I no longer will be using it to burn DVDs. I reinstalled Nero and applied Nero SP2 patches but it didn't solve it.

Nero OEM version 6 patched to 6.3.1.20 bundled.

    Problem resolved - Go around

Previously (before SP2 install) wrote DVD Shrink output files to Create DVD files / Hard disk folder (with auto-creation of audio and video folders). Then would come back and burn above files via DVD Shrink / auto burn Nero. Have changed my DVD Shrink output to ISO Image file and burn with DVD Decrypter... worked like a charm .. 3x DVD burns with no coasters. Feeling brave I changed DVD Shrink output to ISO Image file (stored on HD). Then I fired up Nero and chose Burn Image to Disk ... worked just fine. Why I had to change output file types after upgrading from SP1 to SP2, don't have a clue. Fortunately DVD Shrink provided options that eliminates the problem.
