I'm trying to help a friend figure out what happened to her sound. She has Windows XP. I think the sound card is built into her motherboard, which is a Shuttle MK35N. The label also says VIA KM266, whatever that means. Another label on the box says Shuttle MK32N SKT A MATX. Can you tell I'm lost here??

Anyway, in device manager, for other devices, Multimedia Audio Device, there are both a ? and a !. When I go to properties it appears that the drivers have never been there. I've tried to find drivers on both the XP CD and the CD for the motherboard. After the search it says that the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

I'm wondering if the software is on the CD from Shuttle, but am a bit afraid to try anything until I know what I should do. The weird thing is she had sound before and now in properties it acts like it's never been there. It can't find any previously installed drivers, no manufacturer name, etc.

One more thing. She recently installed a Memorex wireless keyboard and mouse. The keyboard has buttons for volume on it. I don't know if that could have any bearing on anything or not.

I looked around some more and found references to Avance AC97 WDM drivers on the CD that came with the motherboard. Also there is a Soundman program on there that used to be on her computer, but is now gone.

    Any ideas?

The Avance drivers sound like the correct ones.
Try uninstalling the listings in the Device manager, reboot, then Windows may find the right drivers, if not install them from the CD.
If Windows finds a new device upon reboot then use the "browse" option and point "Install device wizard" to the CD ROM that has the drivers on it.
Example D:\ or whichever letter the CD ROM is.
You do not have to install Soundman.
