There are several programs I use that, when I launch them, end up in my Startup list in the System Configuration Utility.

I run "msconfig" and take them out, but the next time I launch the application, it puts itself back in the Startup list.

    Musicmatch is one of these.
When I installed, it I set it up not to start when XP was loaded but it seems to have a mind of it's own.
    Realplayer is another one.

So ... how do I keep these programs out of my Startup list ?

Also, how do I clear out all of the unchecked entries in the Startup list.
Programs that don't launch on startup but still have an entry

    thanks

If you can't find, or there isn't the option, to turn off unneeded software, use Mike Lin's StartUpCPL. It puts a tab in your Control Panel and lets you control what loads at boot. MusicMatchJB has a "start w/ Windows?" option in preferences. Sometimes, just toggling the settings in software will get them to behave again.

A lot of programs are written to sneak back into the Startup when they are used. IMs, Real Player, and QuickTime are among those.

You need a specific utility to prevent this. The Mike Lin Startup Control Panel is good to not to have to mess around the MS Config. But it's the companion Startup Monitor that will tell you when a something is trying to put itself in the Startup sequence.

I still use the Startup Control Panel, but I don't use the Monitor any more. Instead, I used the TeaTimer feature of SpyBot Search and Destroy. It does a better job. Having both installed is a pain.

Both TeaTimer and Startup Monitor will immediately notify you when something is trying to be put into the Startup and will ask whether or not you wish to allow this. The answer is not always "no." It will also do this for program installations and updates. All TeaTimer and Startup Monitor know is that something is trying to enter into the Startup.

If you have not done anything proactive to launch TeaTmer or Startup Monitor, you just got a trojan or virus!

thanks, i'll play around with these suggestions

Do any of them allow me to removed items from the startup list for programs that may have been deleted, but still have an entry ?
Or for programs that install a new entry when an upgrade has been done ?

Again ... Musicmatch is the worst offender. Each time I do an upgrade to a new version, I get a new entry in the Startup list. I now have 3 of them.
The list has grown to about 30 items ... many of them for programs that aren't even on my computer anymore.

    Hi,

You can use Startup Control Panel http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml to delete the disabled entries.
If it still shows up in Msconfig, you should delete the entries from Registry.
The disabled entries are present in any of the locations:
    [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]
    [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupfolder]

Having a huge number of programs in the startup list is too bad. Disable some of them.

    regards

You can also try this reg key. H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete them from there. That's how I get rid of them.
