O.K. I'm ready to bite the bullet and install Netscape 7.2 (I now have NS 7.1 on Win XP), but first I have a few questions:

Can I install Netscape 7.2 in a different folder than 7.1, and so have them both available? This is in case a) if something goes wrong in the installation, I can use 7.1 as a browser and for e-mail while I try to figure the problem out, and b) I can be sure that my settings on 7.2 are identical to those in 7.1. (I remember when I installed 7.1 I had some trouble with the e-mail account settings.)

Will the installation of 7.2 use the profile I now have (in c:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default - I only have one profile)?

I remember when I installed NS 7.02 on my old Win 98 machine, I already had a version of Mozilla on it, and they seemed to coexist peacefully. Can the same be said of 7.1 and 7.2?

    xelaw,

I'm so glad you asked these questions before "biting the bullet "!

You can install Netscape 7.2 in the folder of your choice. See these Screen Shots for the install window where you can do so (specifically STEP 1.).

If you have only one Profile, then create a NEW Profile for Netscape 7.2 BEFORE you install 7.2. Sharing a Profile will get you in very hot water. Once installed, you can share Bookmarks, Cache, and Mail between the two Versions of Netscape. I'll be glad to help you with that...

Netscape 7.2 and 7.1 will coexist quite peacefully as long as you have unique Profiles, and they are not installed in the same directory.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Ramona, thanks for the quick reply; I can always depend on you.

Just two more questions: when I make a new profile, I assume I will be doing it using Netscape 7.1; should I put the new profile in a different folder than my present profile? My present profile is called "default" and is in C:\Documents & Settings\user\Mozilla\Profiles\. If the new profile (with a different name) is in the same Profiles folder, how will Netscape 7.2 know which profile to select?

Which version will Netscape Quick Launch open?

Correct, you will create the new Profile using the Netscape 7.1 Profile Manager. Don't do anything further with the Profile, once created. The new Profile should go to the default location where Netscape 7.1 is found. However, give the Profile a name other than "default user ". Delete "Default User" and create a new name, as that is the only way to tell the Profiles apart. See this Screen Shot.

Both Profile names will be listed in the Profile Manager. Or if you chose to bypass the Profile Manager on startup, then you can do this:

    Close Netscape & Quick Launch
Right click the Netscape 7.1 Desktop shortcut
    Click on the Shortcut tab
At the end of the Target line, leave one trailing space and add -default or whatever is the name of the current Profile. If it is Default User, then note that the command line is case sensitive, and will recognize the Profile only if the exact name is used. Once Netscape 7.2 is installed, do the same for the 7.2 Desktop shortcut. They will look similar to this:
    "C:\Netscape 7.1\Netscp.exe" -p ramona -quiet

Note that I have installed 7.1 in the C:\ root directory and not in Program Files. I installed Netscape 7.2 in the default location.

The -quiet disables the splash screen.

Whichever Version of Netscape that you have open. Do a mouseover on the Quick Launch icon, and it will tell you if you have Netscape 7.1 or Netscape 7.2 open. The last entry in the right click context menu will also tell you which version: Exit Netscape 7.1 or Exit Netscape 7.2.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Whoops, I seem to have sent this to the wrong thread. This is where it belongs.

Thank you, Ramona. I just installed Netscape 7.2 and everything seems to be working fine. I followed your instructions to the letter, and created a new profile ( "Netscape 72 ") and then installed NS 7.2 in a different folder than NS 7.1.

Everything seems to be working fine, except that I cannot bypass the profile manager at startup; I tried your suggestion and added " -default" to the address in the desktop shortcut, but the profile manager still shows up.

Since I had a choice of both profiles at NS startup, on the third time I started NS 7.2, I decided to be daring and try the old profile ( "default "), and lo and behold, everything that was in 7.1 is now in 7.2 - bookmarks, e-mail, etc. Even the Java Applet, which never ran under NS 7.1 runs now. (By the way, during custom installation, I did not check any Additional Components, as per your suggestion, so I don't understand why the Java plugin exists in NS 7.2, unless it's part of the old profile.)

I even shut off Netscape 7.2, rebooted, and went back to 7.2 with the old profile, and it still seems to be working! So I guess my question is: can I simply remove the new profile I created now, since I don't seem to need it? Can I then uninstall NS 7.1 (both 7.1 and 7.2 appear in "Add/Remove Programs) without fear of reribution from the great Gecko in the sky?

I was only using "default" as an example, I meant that you should put the name of the newly created Profile, which in your case was Netscape 72. When you entered the name of the old Profile it picked up the Netscape 7.1 Profile, and you are sharing that Profile now... However, if you are uninstalling 7.1 it won't cause problems.
Yes, Netscape will find the Java plugin if it is on the HD from a previous intallation.
Yes, the great Gecko in the sky is forgiving, if you use separate directories for each Version of Netscape. Open Profile Manager and delete the newly created Netscape 7.2 Profile, and when prompted, select "Don't delete files ". Next, check the Profiles folder and remove the Netscape 72 folder. Copy it to your Netscape backup folder. Save the Profile for a rainy day, as an extra Profile comes in handy from time to time.

Ramona, thanks a lot for your help. "default" (small d) is the name of my original profile, which is why I added " -default" to the target on the shortcut, but as I said, the profile manager still appears each time I start NS. I hope it will disappear after I remove NS 7.1 and the other profile.

    Thanks again.

    xelaw,

Maybe I'm confusing you. When you said here:
If you had added -Netscape 7.2, rather than -default, Netscape would have found the new Profile (Netscape 7.2).

However, if you are going to uninstall 7.1 and remove the Netscape 7.2 Profile, from the Profiles folder, then I believe all will be well.

    Hi erg,

By default, in the Popup Manager, there are about 14 sites which are listed for allowable popups, and Netscape is listed twice. Go to Tools | Popup Manager | Manage Popups. You can deselect all sites listed.

    HTH,

    Ramona

Ramona, I did not find under TOOLS a Popup Manager. I did however under EDIT/PREFERENCE/PRIVACY & SECURITY /POPUP WINDOW/EXECPETIONS I found about 14 and removed them there. Is that the same thing? :)

    Hi erg,

Yep, that's the same thing, but you should have a Tools button also. At the very top left, you should have File, Edit View Go, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help.

If it isn't there, you might want to consider uninstalling 7.2, and then reinstalling. It won't have any effect on your Profile data.

    Erg,

Take a look at this Screen Shot of my Netscape 7.2 Tools drop down menu. As you can see, there are several options there included Popup Manager. This is why I suggested that you unstall and reinstall Netscape.
