Hi all: This box has been running great, no problems. But, something always goes wrong just when you think all is ok. So, here it is:

As in the title of this post, all of a sudden, I cannot paste text (Or anything else) into Word 97. The popup menu appears on right click, but when I select paste, nothing happens. Paste in toolbar does not work either. Can paste into email though. Hoping for a simple solution.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Does Ctrl + C (copy) and Ctrl + V (paste) work in Word 97 ?

Hi Pete: Thanks for the response. Yes, control c and control v work, not only that, but after pasting with those keys, then the right click paste function will paste the same text again, but if I open a new doc, the right click paste function does not work.

Many problems in Word are fixed by replacing Normal.dot.

Search for normal.dot and delete it - Word will make a new one when next reopened.

Thanks again Pete, but still a problem. If I delete the normal.dot file, the next time I open word, the copy-paste works using the cursor and drop down menus, however, the next time I open a new doc, it does not. Deleting normal.dot cures the problem only one time. To get it to work again, I have to would have to delete the normal.dot file each time.

Any other fix or do you think I should try a re-install of '97? Hate to because of the update problem.

Try the Detect and Repair function under Help - I think it is in 97 or get to it through Add/Remove Programs.

Hey Pete: Thanks for sticking with me on this. I went to add/remove office 97, reinstall components, asked for CD, inserted, asked for product ID, entered, repaired installed Word 97 components, darned if it still does not work! Rats!

Ok, Martin - the final possibility is to run System File Scanner (sfc /scannow) and see if that fixes the problem which is clearly not confined to Word 97. Beyond that I really have no further ideas - apart from Ctrl + c and Ctrl + v :)

Hi All: Sorry to say, SFC replaced a number of files, still no joy.

Hey, thanks Pete, can't win 'em all! Maybe an uninstall, reinstall, will try that when I get some time. Didn't realize how much I needed and used that paste function 'till it didn't work. Gotta try hard to get it fixed. Thanks again, be in touch.

    Hi martinr121

You can try these additional tips at Office Expert. See "Intruders and Troublemakers " about four page views down for specific WORD 97 suggestions... and the general "Troubleshooting Word " that follows.

    Last Resort
A number of years back was having a re-occurring issue (can not remember specifics). Renaming "Normal Dot" and uninstall / reinstall did not cure the problem. We guessed one or more of the files were corrupted in the WORD directory. We deleted off unimportant files and printed out the remaining files. With WORD closed, renamed the "WORD" directory, renamed "Normal Dot ", and created a new WORD directory via Explorer. Opened WORD and made sure it was pointed to the new empty directory. The WORD files we needed to be active, were retyped into the new directory.

Thanks Dennis: I haven't had a chance to follow the link you provided, will do so soon, will post back results.

    Thanks again
