I just got an IBM laptop for my work and it came with a 64 mg memory stick that I'm trying to get to work on my personal pc with windows 98 at home. The error message I'm geting from my pc is that there is no driver to read the usb unknown device. I tried to download one off the internet but it still doesn't work. Can someone help me out

Pat_M--Go the site of the memory stick's manufacturer and see if they offer a driver. Download it, install it, and reboot with the memory stick plugged in. With luck Windows will recognized the stick and connect it with the driver. If not, you can try using Device Manager. Post back if you need instructions for that.
P.S. Do you have USB enabled in your BIOS? Win98 did not do that by default.

If you're talking about those thumb size jump drives, then yes you will need to download and install the driver for it. As Welshjim said, go the website of the manufacturer's website and look for the W98 driver.

Pat_M--Just want to emphasize that you have to install the driver (somewhere you can remember, if you have to direct Windows to it) by clicking on whatever you downloaded. Just downloading will not make available for use.

The supplier of the Laptop should have provided you with the driver CD for
the memory stick. Refer to them first. Sometimes, if you download drivers,
they are not always going to work with the hardware model you have.
Then again, USB drivers are simple items, so you should not have problems with a download from the manufacturer's site. Good luck.
    regards

If you can't find the drivers for Windows 98, it may be a lot simpler to just buy one that does. You can get them cheap off www.pricewatch.com ($12-$15). Just make sure they have drivers for Windows 98.

My USB memory stick (made by MicroAdvantage) came with a CD that had drivers. However, the instructions said they were for Win98SE and I ran Win98FE. I went to MicroAdvantage's site and their driver page said (in my words) this driver may or may not work with Win98FE, but try it. So I downloaded it and the memory stick works fine.
P.S. On my WinXP PC, I did not have to use the CD or download drivers. The stick found the drivers it needed automatically. One good thing about XP.

IBM may have several vendors of the pen drive and may not be able to supply Windows 98 drivers.

These small jump drives arrived on the market AFTER MS released Win98. How do you figure that they could have included the driver for it when it wasn't even on the market yet?

As Welshjim & I have both said, Pat_M will need to D/L & install the w98 driver from the specific vendor.

Maverick, your logic baffles us. We are talking about the buy date of the
Laptop + memory stick and not the release date of Win98.

What I am trying to explain to you is that how could MS have included the driver for the jump drive when they weren't even in existence at that time? These removable flash drives came on the market sometime around 2001 - I doubt any Win98 CD would have the appropriate drivers for them.

Well, I understandably give up on this - no-one on this post apart from Maverick is talking about USB memory stick drivers being available at the release of Win98.
One last time ....we are talking about the lack of a USB driver that came with the Laptop when it was purchased or a suitable download.

There is no such thing as a just a "usb driver" that comes with a laptop. USB support is included in the MB chipset. Regardless of whether you have the chipset drivers or not, you still need the device driver for the jump drives. They are two separate things.

Merlin you are arguing in circles. I refuse to debate further with someone who can't properly follow the thread.

Sadly no word from Pat_M whether the downloaded drivers were installed and whether the BIOS setting was checked.
