When I try to download files, Win XP Pro says that it can't write to a temp dir as it doesn't exsist. Downloading in the past it always just created to dir. Any suggestions.

dishon--Maybe humor WinXP and create the temp folder before trying to download. Then see if you can download.

By all means, create one if you must. Generally speaking, Windows will create what it needs.

I'll be happy to share one of mine. :)

    C:\temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Guest\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Motive\Acme\plugin\store\temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\PowerQuest\Drive Image\6.0\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\hp deskjet assistant\845c\enu\temp
    C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Users\Default\Misc\Temp
    C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\TEMP
    C:\Program Files\Roxio\GoBack\temp
    C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp
    C:\WINDOWS\temp
    C:\WINDOWS\assembly\temp
    C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Temp

Right the missing temp file is,

    C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GHIJKHMN

    I have the path,

    C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

but no other dir after this. Another logon on the pc has a lot of other dir. I did a disk clean up and got it to remove temp internet files etc. It won't let me create any folders in the,

    C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

dir from XP. I will try from dos.

    dishon...

Temporary Internet Files is a separtate folder => C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. The Temp folder is a folder at the same level (in foler Local Settings).

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Local Settings\ then right-click => select New => select Folder => Name the folder Temp. Note: The the "T" is upper-case

Do you have a C:\Windows\Temp?? If not navigate to C:\Windows and follow the same procedure to add a "Temp" folder there as well.

I think we may be letting the tail wag the dog here. I think you only need to redirect the download to some place of your choosing and it will remain there for all subsequent downloads. You should be seeing that as an option when downloading a file. You may create this destination folder or browse to an existing one.

It seems possible that some program that you downloaded in the past created a folder for its use and that folder has since been deleted. Just ignore that incorrect default folder and redirect the download as outlined above.

The dir C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files is marked as read only. It won't change even if I uncheck the read only check box and apply it reverts to read only.

I can't re-direct the download as it seems to download to the TIF dir first before moving to my chosen dir.

I seem to be having the same problem as the thread below,

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33984

I will read through that one and see if any suggestions there can be followed.

ps, I have Ad-Aware, Spybot, Zonealarm and McAfee virus running. It could be a setting in one of those.

That's an XP standard. All folders are marked "Read Only" but it is disregarded by the system.

Have you tried emptying the TIF folder? It sometimes gets corrupt and will cause problems like you have.

Well don't know what happened. I just reinstalled my download software and I can download again. I still can't see or write to the TIF dir.

dishon--Glad to hear all is well.
When you told us it was to a TIF folder/file that you wanted to download, I wondered why. By definition they are Temporary and will be deleted when you run IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files or use DiskCleanUp or even just over time. Not a good place for a download you want to keep until you decide to delete.

I confess, I was somewhat misdirecting my advice it seems. I had no idea you were using separate download software and also did not understand that you were trying to write to the TIF folder, which won't be allowed since that's a system cache folder.

All's well that ends well I suppose.

    Best regards.
