I know you can number the shortcuts to keep them in the order you want but there must be another way to get them to stick. I have had the quick launch work both ways in the past. Sometimes it keeps the order you put them in and sometimes it don't? I tried the taskbar repair tool and all that does is tell you to number the shortcuts.

Does anybody know how to restore the quick launch bar so that it will keep the order of the icon's that you select without assigning them with a number?

There must be a way to do this.

    Thanks

Yep .. done that and it still won't keep the order I put them in? It's strange cause it use to keep them in the order I put them in? There must be a reg tweak somewhere to restore them to stay put.

    Thanks

Another thing to try is Right Mouse Taskbar, Properties and UNselect Group Similar Taskbar Buttons.

Tried that to .. still no go? I think I'll try deleting some of the shortcuts and see if I can get them in order that way?

    Thanks

Try opening the quicklaunch folder. C:\Docs and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quicklaunch. Click view>arrange icons and deselect auto arrange and show in groups if selected.

    Hey Dave,
Tried that to .. I wonder what changed that caused this to just start happening? Since it worked right once you'd think there would be a reg tweak to get it to stick.. I'll keep trying and post back if I can fiqure it out.

    Thanks

    Try this.
Save settings on exit It's on line 54, right side. If that doesn't do it try the Restore Winlogon\Userinit, line 263, right side.

Zander - take a look at the .reg file from line 263. Is it doing what you think it should or is there possibly a typo in the file?

Unless I'm missing something, it looks as it should to me. After looking at the file again though, there is one problem with it that one could run into. On my computer windows is installed to D:\Windows. I guess it should be pointed out that if your windows installation is installed to a different location than the path stated in the regfile ( "Userinit "= "C:\\WINNT\\system32\\userinit.exe, ")it should be changed accordingly. Are you seeing something I'm not?

Since my last post to this thread yesterday another thought occurred to me about this problem. I wonder if this problem could be caused by the default 400 folder limit thing where windows only remembers the settings for that number of folders.

If you haven't got this fixed yet you might try the regfile on line 2 of the same page (Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000). I can't say for sure it will work or not but I think it would be worth a try.

Zander - I'm seeing pretty much the same thing you noticed - the path is specific to a W2K install with %system% on C:\ and while I haven't played with .reg files that much
    C:\\WINNT\\system32\\userinit.exe
sorta got my attention as well.

Since these things download as a .reg file you are supposed to run, I'm guessing that most folks just run them, given the reputation of the site that stores it.

You're most likely right there. The keys themselves are present in my registry with the same values except for the path to windows of course. Maybe a short note should be added to my post with the link warning about this in case somebody just downloads the file and doesn't bother to read the rest of this thread. What do ya think?
