When choosing the chkdsk tool from your hard drive properties ('Check now...' from the tools tab), where is the log of the operation stored? I assume that choosing that button runs chkdsk.exe in the system32 dir, so I would think a log file is generated...

    TIA

    Hi blockage...

    Welcome to the BBS... :D

    1) Open "Event Viewer "
    2) Select "Application ". Scroll down until you find "Winlogon" and double-click on it

I know you can redirect this info to a file. I'll find the command and post back.

    HTH

    Hi blockage...

I edited my post above and removed the redirect to output file part as it was not that great. I'll do some more searching.

Yes...Run from the command line "chkdsk c: /f ". Say "Y' to schedule scan for next reboot then reboot your PC. After chkdsk is done and your back into Windows check the Event Viewer for the "winlogon" as I mentioned above.

Thx dobhar...that got it to show up in the app log.

I did a little diggin in the registry and a find-in-files search, but i didn't see any way to log the results when doing it from the disk properties, tools tab gui. no biggie...

Found a good kb article on chkdsk

    Hi blockage...

Glad it worked out for you. :D

If you do a "Search" on the BBS for chkdsk you will find some good posts on the subject with some MS links on how to use CHKDSK.

    Cya...

You can copy the winlogon results to your Clipboard.

Do this, Highlight the results and copy them to your Clipboard. You can paste it into any program you like and edit/print it from there.

Even easier and slightly better is to open the winlogon event, click the icon below the up/down arrows (to send a text copy to the clipboard) and go from there.

thx for the replies...all good ideas.

The reason why I was looking for it in the first place is that when you complete a chkdsk via the disk prop / tools tab, all you get is a simple msg box stating "Disk Check Complete" with no indication on what it did or if it was successful. Now that I know that it's just a hook into chkdsk.exe, it's simple enough to see the output at a cmd prompt.

Excellent BBS BTW...looks like a bunch of people who know their stuff
