I'm runnning WIN98 SE on a Gateway Solo laptop Pentium II 233, 160 RAM. I run Norton and spyware routinely. Most times I canniot get Windows to put it in Standby. When it does go to standby often I cannot wake it up. If it wakes up it is frozen and I have to reboot anyway. Any thoughts are appreciated.

It's a known issue. Windows 98 Power Management is a faulty feature. Micro$oft fixed it, only in Windows ME, Ibelieve. Just don't use it. Go to Power Management in Control Panel, and disable it, setting you monitor, and hard drive to "never" option

I have my power-management settings to "always on" and then, below, two "never "s. Do these settings mean that power management is off? And if yes, can I remove the two "load power profile "s from msconfig|startup? TIA

Go into your BIOS menu and make sure that APM (advanced power management) is enabled.

I have two laptops with 98SE. I set standby to never as recommended, but I do use the turn off monitor and hard drives options. Those work, on my machines anyway.

You don't have to remove them. Just make sure, there are no checkmarks in either of two boxes.

Something else that may be involved is the screen saver. Some badly written screen savers can crash the computer in combination with the power settings.

These settings overcome the freezing on my desktop machine:
    Power Scheme: Always On
    Monitor off: after 15mins
    Harddrives off: after 30mins

Screen Saver set to "blank screen ".
Check the screen saver is not timed to start at the same time as "monitor off" or "hardrive off ".

    Solved - I hope

Hi - I changed settings on the Power Management panel under "Laptop" to "never ". I did not change the BIOS settings. However it is going into standby when I close the lid. And it wakes up when I press the switch. I'll try the keystrokes for "standby" later.

    Thanks for the help everyone.
