I'm getting plagued by this error message dozens of times a session saying winupd.dll can't be found. What is causing this, and how can I stop it?

You are infected by a thing that is a sorta-spyware, sorta-trojan, very-annoying critter.

You will probably also find the below in \system32
    SpOrder.dll
    Wincore.dll
    CidRules.dll
    Inetadpt.dll
    Monitor_ch.dat

Trend calls the thing ADW_TARGETSOFT.A and a scan with their online Housecall should find it but I'm not sure right now if it is removing bad stuff or just telling you about it.

Also possible that the latest version of Ad-aware or Spybot might find and remove it.

Winupd.dll is not the problem. The problem is something that seems to be looking for winupd.dll, and when it can't find it, pesters you with endless error messages to that effect.

In view of the pervasiveness of this problem (as witness its appearence on dozens of other websites), I'm amazed that nobody on this site knows what to do about it. I truly appreciate kind-hearted generalities, but was hoping for the specific silver spike to drive into this vampire's heart.

Download HijackThis.exe from here. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet!

Get LSPfix.Exe, you are going to need it.
Uninstall Web Rebates and TV Media, if possible and reboot.
    Remove these items in HJT.

Did everything you suggested. In fact, did it twice.

    Hi davott,

Suggest you download HijackThis.exe Version 1.98.2 from here, overwriting the version you currently have, and post a new log.

You may want to print this out, or save it to text where you can access it in safe mode. It's important to do everything in the order listed.

Download CWShredder from here. Save it to the desktop.

Open Ad-aware and check for updates.

Open Spybot and click mode>advanced. Then tools in the left pane. Click resident and uncheck Tea Timer.

    Download and install RegSeeker.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and disconnect from the internet, then click fix. **refdesk entries are optional. Leave if that is your preferred homepage.

Open LSPFix, check the box I know what I'm doing and then click finish.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

    Open CWShredder and click fix.

Search for and delete any files named ie_plugin.inf
    and systb.exe

Search for and delete any files and folders named pc powerscan and virtual bouncer.

Open C:\Windows and delete the following files if present.

HOLY MOLEY, Keemosabe! This may take me some kinda time.

I'll get back to you when all is (hopefully) done.

And, thanks for what must have been a massive investigatory job.

Quite welcome. To make the file searching a whole lot faster, you may want to download and install Agent Ransack. Far superior to XP's search tool.

I must be bit by the devil. I've tried everything until I'm blue in the face. But, I'm still getting the error message: CAN'T OPEN WINUPD.DLL, which is contained in a RUNDLL folder.

Doesn't anyone know the specific pest that is causing this problem?

Since winupd.dll, as far as I can tell, is only associated with spyware/viral apps, whatever is trying to call it is almost certainly a bad thing. I'd have to say (at the risk of being chided again for offering you more kind-hearted generalities) that you really need to figure out what is trying to start it and get rid of that.

Did you ever run the online AV scans that Dave & I both suggested? As of the last HJT log you posted, I didn't see any signs of it.

If the problem is happening at startup, Autoruns probably does about the best job of showing all the stuff that wants to autorun and you should be able to isolate the critter that way.

Otherwise, get Filemon and have it running. Filter out the known 'normal' stuff to reduce the amount of entries you have to wade thru and then note the time when you next see the error and figure out what was running or trying to run at about that time.

The name Winupd.Dll is not a specific beast, several malware's have used a file with this name. The file Winupd.Dll is probably not in a folder named Rundll, but are you seeing in the error message a command line like this 'rundll32.exe /s winupd.dll'?
Would you post a new HJT log, and then click on Config in HJT, and have it generate a StartupLog?

I have found what I believe is THE answer:

Get into your registry with Regedit.

    Drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\

    Click on, and delete TARGETSOFT

That's it! End of problem. After 3 months of torture, I'm now on my 3rd straight day of freedom. Works for me. Hope it works for you.
