I was not sure where to post this, so I decided to post it here. I recently re-installed Windows XP Professional (there was nothing wrong with the original Windows XP Professional, I just like the idea of kinda having a brand new computer again.) Well, everything went okay, even when installing AOL. But it was trying to detect my modem, and I guess it didn't. I'm not sure what to do as this has never happened to me before. I checked my telephone line and everything seemed okay. By the way, I have 56K modem. Would re-installing Windows have anything to do with this problem? Does anybody know what happened or how I can fix this? AOL does have an option of installing the modem manually, but you have to choose the modem you have and I am not sure of which modem I have, does anybody know how I can find this information out? I appreciate any reponses.

The reinstall may well have caused the problem. Especially if you did not format the partition you were putting XP on.

Everest should give you information about your modem and pretty much any other hardware in the PC.

Not a better idea. Especially with XP. If it is working with no problems leave it alone. Especially if you have much 3rd party hard/software and Internal Modem.

    I agree.

Also with an Internal Modem an IRQ conflict could have been created between the Audio and the Modem. If this does exist it can be very tough to fix.

I believe ( from past experience by myself and others ) an External Modem would be better. ( IN ALL OSs ) They are on BIOS setup and dedicated External COMM ports.

Now, If this has changed will someone please let me know.

    external modem

    hello,

thanks for everybodys concerns. I know re-installing windows xp was stupid now. I was wondering - if i just install an external modem would that be all I need to sign back on to AOL?

    many thanks...

To the best of my knowledge and former experience I would say yes.
