Every few days, I notice that Quick Time is running on my task bar. I do the msconfig thing and uncheck qttask, but a few days later, there it is again. The only problem this is causing is that it is annoying me. I like to keep what loads at startup to a minimum. I can't just delete the Quick Time program, because I think it is neccessary for a few programs we have on the computer. I know this is so for a program we have for my high schooler to practice for the ACT test. I am guessing that it must be set up so any time Quick Time is used, it loads itself to be included in the programs that load at startup. I am also guessing that some other program some other family member uses is loading it as well. I know my daughter isn't practicing for the ACT test that often!
Oh, and I apologize if I have asked this question before. Something in the back of my mind says I have, but I ran a search of all of my posts and couldn't find anything. Any suggestions will be appreciated as usual.

I think it will remain disabled from startup if you fix the run entry with HijackThis. You will need to enable it in msconfig and reboot for it to show up in the scan. Fix and reboot. Quicktime player should still function when needed.

The program I use for turning stuff off from lauching at bootup is STARTUP CONTROL from www.mlin.net It's a lot easier than messing around msconfig.

But there is a second problem to this issue. Many programs will put themselves back into the launch at startup once they are used. QuickTime is among these. Real Player, Window Washer, and various IMs (including MSN Messenger) will do it also.

There are two programs that will notify you that such is happening and will allow you to prevent this change: Startup Monitor by Mike Lin or TeaTimer by Spybot. Since you "should" have Spybot installed, I'd recommend using its TeaTimer.

Why prevent it from running with outside defeats? Just go into the QuickTime Control Panel Preferences. Click the Browser Plugin tab and uncheck the one that tells it to load the Quick Time system tray helper. I've yet to use msconfig for anything but troubleshooting. Programs nearly always have an option to run in the background or not.

    Preferences

I don't know if you are running the same version I am, but on mine you can set this by opening Quick Time player, clicking edit, preferences, Quick Time peferences. this gives a drop-down window from which you select Browser plug-ins. the last item is Quick Time system tray icon. Uncheck the box.

    RayH,

Just go into the RealPlayer Preferences. In the Automatic Services click Configure Message Center. Check the box that says to do its stuff only when RealPlayer is running. Also, uncheck the three items for it to check for. I forget exactly, but it's stuff like music news, etc. The thing never opens up unless I call for it.

You can also tell MSN Messenger not to startup with Windows in its options panel.

The version of Quick Time I am running is 5.0.2. I open it, go to Edit, Preferences, Quick Time preferences, then there is browser plug-ins, but there isn't anything about the system tray icon.

Mine is version 6.5.1. I don't have an older version to look at. However, the new version is available for free at :Quick Time website
That is the version I'm running. Update may also be available from the help menu.

hi...i'm new to computers and new to this forum so i hope i'm not stepping on anyone.
i had same prob with qttask and found a help forum that suggested i simply rename qttask to qttask2 or whatever. this will keep it from starting up at boottime and quicktime will work ok without it. if you find that you need the file just rename it back. qttask.exe is in the quicktime folder in programs folder or whereever you installed it to.
this solution is working for me.
