    Hi Mac,

No, not many ideas. Quite a strange one. One thing I thought about was if the power button is getting jammed slightly. I had that for a while and it caused all sorts of strange problems. It will still "stick" if I am not careful when pressing it.

Just had another thought (surprise myself :D ). Go into the BIOS settings and look for things like "Wake on LAN ", "Wake on ring ", etc and disable them.

Hope somebody can spot the cause.

You have to hold the off/on button in a long time, 4-5 seconds, for the power to shut off.

    Hi

Have you tried looking in your power options in the control panel. if there is an option, enable 'advanced power configuration (APC)'

Just to dive in, check out sparrows article, and also this one: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313290
Let me make sure I understand this problem correctly.

You go to Start->Shutdown, the screen greys out, then you get a full screen graphic that says 'It is now safe to shut off your machine'. At that point, you use the power button on the computer to turn off the machine, but this causes the machine to power right back up into windows?

I think we may be dealing with a mismatch of BIOS settings and XP settings. That behavior implies you have an ACPI BIOS, but are using the 'Standard PC' HAL (as seen in device manager), since the machine doesnt actually power off.

    Heres a plan
update the BIOS of your machine
check bios settings to disable ACPI or otherwise alter power button behavior
under ControlPanel->Power->Advanced make sure both button settings are 'power off'
check the system event log for information about why the machine restarted

Post back- will also want to know exactly what kind of machine you have, and any relevant BIOS settings. If you are confused about any of these steps, please ask questions. I also would like to mention that switching back to the ACPI HAL (the recommended and preferred setting) requires a repair reinstall of XP.
