Apparently some files may have been deleted or otherwise some how moved.

Unles someone has other ideas, from my own past experience this may requires a re-install of Windows to get things back in place.

What version of Windows are you using ?

    Hi ...

COmmand.com has to be functional for the system to boot, so If I understand your post correctly, the shortcut has been clobbered. One easy way to find out ....click Start | run ...type in the word "command" with out the quotes and hit enter ...that should open an msdos window....

If that works, just right click where the shortcut should be or where you want it select New | shortcut ....point it to command.com in the root directory C:\

Once the shortcut is created, you right click on it and select properties to edit it's functions

    Cheers
    Jake

??????? That may be where the problem is. ??????

There should only be 1 ( one ) command.com in the c:\Windows folder. Where did the other 3 come from. And one COMMAND.PIF file

If I am reading correctly and you are using Win98 SE ( sec ) then the proper command come should be

93,890 in size and a date of 4/23/99.

If the wrong one if being used then it will bring up the error. And also evne thought the errors says "can't find " it may be trying to use the wrong version.

How was 98SE installed. Was it a clean install or an upgrade over 98 ?

Has any attempt been made to re-install the OS.

At least to me that makes no sense at all. How could it be modified at an earlier date than the creation date ?

And if you can not restart Windows then something is REALY messed up.

A question just came to mind. And the above may be a clue.

When you have been at the MS-DOS Prompt how did you get out of it ??

If you used anything other than typing EXIT and hitting enter that may well be the problem.

Anything other than EXIT can/may or will cause the problem at hand. As anything other than EXIT does not allow Windows to switch things back properly.

I did it ONCE And wound up reinstalling Windows.

    ms-dos error

    hi bob,
A question just came to mind. And the above may be a clue.
When you have been at the MS-DOS Prompt how did you get out of it
    ??

no i can't run ms-dos programme when i want to restart widows in ms-dos mode from windows then this message appear and when i want to restart computer from windows suddenly my windows stoff for a sec and then restart i m afraid like my windows can cuase crash if i restart again from windows so i m very becareful to start ms-dos from windows.my winodws working very fine i m not getting any problem it just when i open ms-dos programe then this error appears, i find files by pif then i try to open so i can not run any pif files
like autoexc and msdos error appearing make sure path and file name are correct and that all are required libraries are available.
my mind goes that something is wrong with my ms-dos pif and files extension of pif because when i try to open files error appears

just waiting to solve this problem hopefuly i will get back..............

    That is a possibility.

Now just to make sure. Are we disscussing the MS-DOS Prompt or the MS-DOS MODE. Two different things.

In the .pif shortcut there is a setting for "EXIT on Close " or something like that. I will check later and see I I can find a .PIF file on the other machine.

But in actuallity the MS-DOS Prompt and the MS-DOS mode are very similiar to a DUAL BOOT. After all you are going between two OSs. And if it is not handled carefully ( VERY CAREFULLY ) it can cause problems such as you are having.

This message does point to a problem with a .PIF file. And it is the one that switches to the MS-DOS Prompt.

Check the Windows folder and see if it is there.

    Yahoo!

Your most welcome Z4U and I'm so glad this was the problem as is fixed now. Thanks for coming back to update your post.

I haven't done any refresh on the default pif's setting particulars or I would have also offered those. I am on my winXP machine right now and the harddrive that has win98 is sitting on the table behind me. <-Don't ask! A win98 look_me_up was not an option. If you care to check into this post again later, I will have updated with the locations, sizes, where they ( "dos prompt. pif" and "exit to dos prompt.pif ") can be found and what their configuration should be.

For now you are up and running and that's progress. :)

By the way, while I may (or not) be a goddess :) , I'm not from Microsoft. I'm just a plain wrapper home user same as most on this board.
