I pointed the desktop shortcuts to these two folders to folders I'd created on my slave HDD, d:\music and d:\pictures. This works fine. However, every so often a My Music or My Pictures folder gets created in d:\my documents. I want XP to quit recreating these folders and just use what I specified.

Someone told me that TweakUI can change this, but I looked through it and couldn't find anything about these folders there.

    Hi shadowhawk...

In TweakUI I believe your looking for...

    1) Start TweakUI - Click "Start" button and select "RUN" from menu
    2) In "RUN" window enter TweakUI then click OK
    3) Using TweakUI - In the left-Hand menu expand "My Computer "
    4) Select "Special Folders "
    5) On right-hand window => Under Folder: select "My Documents" then click "Change Location" button and select the folder on your D: Drive.
    6) Do the same for your "My Music" folder.

I found what you're talking about, but there was only an entry for My Documents. There weren't any for My Music or My Pictures.

    Hi shadowhawk!

The folders that You are dealing with are User Shell Folders that are subfolders to the My documents folder. They are specified in the registry. If You are only concerned with the location of the folders and not so much by their name, it should be possible to, in Windows Explorer, right-click and drag-n-drop the folders to Your desired location. Upon release of the right mouse button, choose move here.

Open the registry editor (start > run > type REGEDIT > OK), check that MY COMPUTER is highlighted, click Edit > Find and type User Shell Folders > Find next.

Now, in the right hand panel, check the path to the folders. If it is the desired path, then mission semi completed.

If You want to skip the MY part of the folder name, You will have to manually edit the registry to reflect the altered name as well as change the name in Windows Explorer.

Editing the registry can go bad and a precautionary backup is called for. I am a Ghost user and have created backup images of my system so, I'm not 100% sure that the below will suffice:

To backup the registry, highlight MY COMPUTER, click File > Export and save to a location where it is easy to find.
I would wait for someone to confirm ...... ......

Had a brain fart. I forgot that I went into the registry and edited the paths of those folders to what I want. Perhaps this is all I needed to do. I hope...

    Hey shadowhawk...

There is another program that I use to "Tweak" my system and it is called X-Setup Pro and it's free for personal use.

If you decide to use this program...

    1) Start X-Setup
    2) Under "Start Options" select/click "Classic" button
    3) Navigate to System and expand
    4) Select/click and expand "File System "
    5) Select/click and expand "Folders "
    6) Select/click and expand "Data "
    7) Under Data" select/click "General Folders #1 "
    8) On the right-hand side under "General Folders #1" you will see "Personal Files ". The default location is in the window. Click on the "..." button and select the folder on your D: Drive
    9) Back to Left-hand side of window. Under Data" select/click "General Folders #2 "
    10) On the right-hand side under "General Folders #2" you will see "My Pictures ", My Music ", and "My Video ". Once again just click on the "..." button for each and select the folder on D: Drive
