I have W2K (SP2) installed on a system with an M810 motherboard with Silicon Graphics chipset. Everything was working fine until I installed Microsoft's latest "Critical Update ". At the same time I installed the COM+ rollup and an updated driver for my video adaptor. Everything went fine until I rebooted. The display changed to 640x480 (16 colors) on its own. When I tried to change it back to 800x600 it immediately rebooted - no blue screen, nothing. It reboots as soon as I click on Properties, whether right-clicking the desktop, or selecting Display from Control Panel.

I re-installed the original driver, but the same result. I uninstalled the other Microsoft updates. No luck. I turned off all hardware acceleration of video. No luck. On top of all that, with the instant reboots & resulting chkdsk I lost all my incoming email.

I don't want to have to reinstall W2K if at all possible, but I need more color depth and higher resolution. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd start out by booting into safe mode and uninstalling video driver and any other visible drivers that were added. Then, add back one by one.
