Having installed SP2, the Local area Connection icon in the toolbar shows "limited or no connectivity ". What is the impact of this. I am not networked now but may want to in the future.

Several people have reported that after SP2 is installed the connection to their ISP is broken. Click Start|Control Panel|Network Connections, right click on that Local Connnection and click Repair.
(Also, assume you have rebooted and checked all your cable connections.)

You say you are not networked now. Does that mean you have no internet connection? If so, there is nothing Repair can do, since there is no signal to allow it to create the various addresses and settings. You can just hide that icon by right clicking on a blank spot in the taskbar|Properties|Customize and set "Hide when inactive" for the Local Connection icon.
If, however, you do have an internet connection, assume you have also checked all cable connections, and rebooted. And do you mean that Repair is not functioning or that it is trying but able to re-establish your connection?

Answer to Local Area Network -- limited or no connectivity

I have seen many messages re: the icon in the systray and the error message "limited or no connectivity." Did try to chat with the SP2 tech team, but the first line of techs do try hard, but are still in elementary school so to speak.

After trying some of the suggestions on this BBS, I found the workable answer.

First: delete the broadband connection existing before downloading sp2 and
Don't forget to delete also the short cut on the desk top.

Second: go to network connections in the control panel. Right click on local area connections under the heading "lan or high speed internet "

    Third: go to properties.

Fourth: on the first ( general ) tab page at the bottom of that page. Remove ( un-click) the check mark for both "show icon in notification area when connected" and "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity "

    Fifth: click the ok button

When you re-boot, be patient and you will end up with one "connection icon" which will be your broadband icon

    Judy--
Yes, what you say looks correct, but concerning "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" if you really have no connectivity on your ISP connection, in my opinion that icon performs a useful service.

I don't know why this works, but if you enable the local area connection ( did forget to include this step, however, opening the connection to get to the page to do the un-checking does enable it ) the system eventually boots up as enabled in future boots.

If you only choose repair in the list for that error icon, the repair says that it cannot find the renewing IP address. Since the broadband cable uses different IP addresses, you cannot put the IP addresses into the list - anyway that is what SBC told me.
