SP2 Home Network fix, But need help on Printer networking

    Hello All,

I am not sure where to begin. I slipstreamed XP Pro with SP2 and installed it in a new motherboard system. Everything went fine.

I then noticed all the new firewalls. One is the newly SP2 enabled by default one. And I also have one on my new motherboard chipset GeForce3-250GB chipset.

I noticed I had lost my home network abilities to view and alter other computers in my home even when the new drive was set up for file and printer sharing.

I fixed this by adding a NetBIOS protocol. I believe the NVIDIA GeForce3-250GB was the cause of this. It actually told me in the built in logging feature that the port was blocked. It said I was trying to share my network on the TCP/IP. Adding the NetBIOS protocol fixed this problem.

The problem I am still having problems with is letting other computers in the house to share a printer on my home network. On a few occasions I can click ADD a Printer and Search the network. It finds it, but then hangs during install. Sometimes it finds, installs, but then when I went to use it, it said printer ready, but when I click print it says "HANDLE NOT VALID" :(

If anyone knows my solution, please help.

    Thank you

    GeForce3-250GB Firewall Printer FIX

    Hello All,

I found the cause and the fix. This thread should be moved out of Windows SP2 since it was NOT the cause.

The title to this thread should have been: GeForce3-250GB Firewall Printer FIX and Home network fix.

Since I did an SP2 and new motherboard upgrade at the same time, it confused me as to which one was at fault.

The new INVIDA GeForce3-250GB Chipset has a built in firewall. It also has an excellent interface to access the firewall setting and a beautiful logging feature. All I had to do was to clear the log, go to my laptop and try to install the printer. It logged it was blocking access to port 1900. Then all I had to do was click on setting and look for that port. Clicked allow incoming and outgoing port activity. Done! :)

Sorry this ended up in the SP2 thread. Hope someone can move it out into XP.

    Glad you found the fix.

Thanks for posting back with it.

    I'd have suspected SP2 myself.

Happy to move the thread for you.
