First, download and install the Win Me version of Defrag

Then, ensure that Show All Files is set in Explorer, and browse to \Windows\Applog, select all files and delete.

Ensure that your recycle bin is emptied, and IE browser cache.

    Now Defrag.

After doing this you have a choice in regard to the Applogs. They are used by Defrag to "Optimize your program Startups" and are maintained by a program called Taskmon.

If you are running a relatively new PC with a relatively new disk drive, then do the following. (and, you can always change back if you wish). In fact, even on older slower machines, the difference is negligible, and the defrag times are exaggerated.

Do Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup Tab
    UNselect Taskmon
OK your way out, and reboot.

Then, browse to \Windows\Applog, selecting and deleting all files again.
This will stop defrag from using this info since Taskmon is no longer running. If you ever want to start "optimizing startups" again, just reselect Taskmon.

When defragging win98 (if have problems) it's always best to:
    1. restart in Safe Mode
    2. run Scandisk first
    3. Defrag

In win98 one should always use scandisk prior to defragging.
