From what I read, a serial ATA drive should blow away any earlier IDE flavor. A real screamer. Not posistive it is faster than the ATA-133 but probably. And being able to hot swap an IDE drive will be nice. We've done it with SCSI arrays for years and it can be a life saver.

I don't know for sure but at a guess I'd say the install would require the same sort of thing that installing to a SCSI drive does. Early in the process you will be prompted to press an F key (F6 I think but not sure) if you need to load alternate drivers. You do, so press the key and then follow the prompts to insert the media that contains the drivers so they can be loaded. The install should proceed normally after that.

    What Motherboard.

Probably a utility on the Motherboard CD to create a driver floppy for the SATA controller.

Then hit F6 as soon as the XP CD boots.

Some six months ago, I installed XP-pro on a computer based on Asus P4P800 and a Seagate 7200.7 SATA. The SATA was detected in BIOS and was also detected by the Windows Installer. After the installation was completed, I added a Seagate 7200.7+ PATA in a mobile rack (PATA for backwards compatibility with other backup drives).

The strange thing is that during POST, it displays "no drives detected" but when entering the BIOS, they have been detected and the boot order can be chosen as per identified drives.

This may not be the answer to Your question but I was under the impression that SATA is no different than PATA in this respect and if the BIOS detects the SATA drive, then Windows should be happy without any specific drivers.

It was in my case but that was the only occasion to this date, that I installed on a SATA.
