    Hey,
After Norton crashed on me I tried to do a uninstall to reinstall it and it wouldn't corperate. So I went to symetecs home page and followed their instructions to uninstall it and that didn't work either? So I manually deleted all folders pertaining to norton then did a reg search and deleted all referances to it then did a windows xp sp2 system repair again. So heres the thing .. The security center sees norton as protecting my computer? It's not on my hard drive? This really stinks !! I've been wanting to get rid of Norton for awhile now and am looking into a replacement antivirus. Any suggestions?

While you were in the registry deleting Norton entries, did you make sure to get the Symnatec ones? and then run registry cleaner to clean up loose ends?

    Hey Mark,
To answer your question .. I sure did !! It only took about 2 hours ! What a pain. That Norton sure is a hog. Whats a leaner mo better virus program?

    Thanks

I definitely know about a leaner AV program, the link to it is the one in red below, and is free. They ask for your email address, and that is only to get the actual download link and registration number, they do not use your email for spamming purposes.
I use it myself. It has only two startup entries, one is listed as a Service, the other a regular Startup, a lot less than Norton.
The Security Center is a new item, and I am not sure of how it 'remembers' things, yet. Perhaps a new installation of an AV program will replace what it has about Norton?

SP2 and Norton are playing pretty nice, for the most part, but this might help you if you decide to reinstall Norton:

I prefer Norton to the competition, but that's just a personal preference. There are many choices, and what works for one user sometimes isn't a good choice for another.

Well what do ya know!! The security center now say's I have two antivirus softwares installed. I took out everything and the kitchen sink to get Norton off my computer but there must be somewhere else that its hiding at. Makes you wonder just how good this security center is when it say's that I'm protected and there is no antivirus software on my computer. Maybe it's time to uninstall the security center. By the way .. I installed FProt and it found a few zipped files with viruses and also the recovery folder for spybot triggered more suspects that Norton Missed .. And my computer is much more responcive and hasn't locked up like it use to.. So far so good.

Any idea's on getting the security center working correctly?

    Thanks

After major reg cleaning and deleting of some files my security center now say's Norton is protecting my computer again? It's not on my hard drive or in my registry? I've searched the web and Symantec's website and am coming up empty handed. Anybody have any idea's?

    Thanks

According to the above, there is either Norton files still present, or some registry entry still exists, or your Windows Management I would say some Norton file is still there, they do have a track record of not doing completely clean uninstalls.
