ZoneAlarm 5.0

I still use the free version of ZA 4.5. A while back, there were some problems related to upgrading to 5.0. Should I upgrade? If I do, do I need to uninstall 4.5 first? Also, when I go to the ZA website, their ad for ZA free does not state that it is 5.0 -- I'm assuming it is and that it does not have AV.

I'm running Win 2000 pro and have Norton AV Systemworks 2002.

Thanks in advance for any opinions (not related to my mental capacity).

and download and install the free Zone Alarm Firewall right at the top. All it contains is the Firewall, no AV, etc. I think you will find it is version 5.1.11.0 which supposedly overcomes problems with earlier v5x. I am running it and have no problems.
Should you delete earlier versions? I almost always do. At worst, you will lose your present settings for giving programs permission to access the Internet. You can download the user manual here

If I were in your position, I would wait a little past v5.5 which is now in advanced beta testing and the people that I consider experts on ZA and are using the new 5.5 beta are saying: "Way Better ".

Your not missing anything or less protected with 4.5

As you probably have learned from the User's Manual, it is not necessary to uninstall an older version of ZA before installing the new. But if you do, ZA says to uninstall from the Start|All Programs|ZA|Uninstall ZA Security rather than Control Panel|Add/Remove. And there is another thread

saying that even the ZA Uninstaller should be modified to read
"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean to get a full uninstall.

 

Hi Jim,

Have you used the uninstall with the "switch" (that's what it's called) setting? I run the pro versions and if I do want to uninstall, I always find something leftover using the standard uninstall for which I use jvPowerTools to get rid of.

I'll try it with the 5.5 upgrade.
