    Hello,

I am ashaimed to say I have never had the pleasure to use a Lazer Jet Printer and am looking into getting one as I Que print jobs up on my current printer (Lexmark) and it is just not fast enough nor will it handle the many pages that I need quicky.

Do Lazer Jet printers print in only black or can they print color as well? I have found a Brother Lazer Jet Printer at a reasonable price but in doing some investigating I find nothing that states anything about color. It does come with a toner cartridge allthough I belive it is just black. Can someone confirm this for me?

    Regards,
    ~FIREDANCER~

Yes - dozens of models out there, but not cheap.

Not a stupid question at all, but standard 'warning' - Please follow Posting Rules # 3 - Meaningful Subject. Edited your thread title.

I'd add, if it doesn't specifically state that the printer prints colour, asume it is black only.

Worth noting that grey scale is usually much better quality (better gradation of shades) than you'll get with an inkjet. So although diagrams and pictures lack colour, they are still usuable and well defined.

I recently bought a Samsung ML-1510 personal laser printer - one of the best purchases I've made for a while. But then I rarely bother printing in colour. I'm seriously considering getting a thermal photo printer and ditching my old HP deskjet.

    Pete and Reggie,

Thanks for the replys I think I am going to go with the brother I found to start with as I do not need color to much and I have a smaller ink jet for that. I appologise for the "Subject Line" of my thread :)

The REAL cost of color lasers is the toner. Color toner can get really pricey. This scares me because a $500-600 color laser can go south and take about $1000 of toner with it.

For black and white printing, a simple laser printer can't be beat. They can be had for about $100 or less. Somebody's laser printer goes on sale every few weeks for about $100. The toner can look pricey. But it's no more pricey than a pair of inkjet cartridges in some printers. But that toner will last longer.

FireDancer--Laser printers cost more to buy but are (almost always) cheaper to operate. The key is how many pages you print. If in the 1000's per month, you will save with a laser printer (but be limited to B&W if that is the kind you buy).
The September 2003 and May 2004 issues of Consumer Reports give some cost per print data. (November includes laser printers.) Note that the cost varies by brand of both inkjet and lasers. And if you can get an honest reading at the store where you plan to buy as to how many copies you can get from an inkjet printer cartridge vs. a laser jet toner cartridge, you can make your own comparison.
