caller ID online flash

I am looking for some software that will alert a person who is on line that they have an incoming call. Kind of like caller ID, but with a message that comes up on the user's monitor. I have seen a couple of references to this kind of program but I don’t remember where, I don’t have a name or even know what to call it so I don't know how to search for it.

I will be setting up a computer for someone who has only one phone line and wants to be able to capture incoming calls somehow, without losing callers because of a constant busy signal. I know voice messaging is an option, and a second phone line, but this sounds possibly like a much simpler solution to the problem.

I’m inviting recommendations if anyone has had any experience with this type of program, how it works, what it costs, which ones to avoid, etc.

I know of your dilema, as I too, only have one phone line. I have been using "callwave" since Nov. 1999 and really like it! It does take up a very small space on my screen while connected to the internet (but nothing I can't live with!).

When I first "installed" that little program it was (and I believe still is) offered for free. I have "upgraded" the program about a year ago (with a subscription fee). That costs around $35.00 a year. I also pay (approx.) $1.25 per month to have the "call forward on busy" option with my phone company. But still much cheaper than have to pay that much per month for another phone line! It is very similar to a regular telephone answering machine! And it will play the recorded message immediately after someone has left one.

My upgraded/subscription plan allows for additional length in recorded incoming messages, shows the caller ID, and can let you add your name to a pre-recorded answering message.

thank you, Vicki. This is exactly what I remembered seeing, and now that I've seen the site, I picked up a few key words to search with and found several other similar programs. Looks like a great alternative for users who are limited to one line.

In fact, the basic service on this program is still free but there are some nice premium options for an additional price. There are others out there which claim to work without the phone company's caller-ID-busy option. So we'll have a lot to research in making our selection, but I sure thank you for pointing me to a good start!
