Every time I log into my computer, I have programs that are scheduled to appear automatically (for example, a messenger window and one for easy control of a scanner). But I'm not sure how to stop them from coming up every time I turn the darn thing on. *sheepish* I know I set it up that way somehow, but for the life of me I can't remember how I did it. How can stop the windows from popping up?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS spunk :)

Go to start>run and type msconfig, then hit enter. Click the startup tab and look for the startup programs you want to kill. Remove the check from the box beside them and click apply, then OK. You will be asked to restart the computer. Allow it to do so.

The simplest way to control what comes on when you boot the computer is Mike Lin's StartUpCPL. You are correct thinking that you should keep what loads at boot to a minimum. It conserves resources, and helps pinpoint troubleshooting.

Also you will want either Mike Lin's Startup MONITOR or SpyBot's TeaTimer. Either will tell you when something is trying to sneak in the Startup. Sometimes when you use something once, it tries to sneak itself into the startup sequence.
