    Hi
I'm using a HP Pavilion I have to USB ports in front, I notice every time I use one of them nothing seems to work. So I have to unplug my printer to plug in my camera, (A Pain), Is there some area that shuts off usb port that I don't know about?
    Thanks
    Shirl

    Shirl,
    Does the other one work?
If it's only one of them that doesn't work, I would be tracing through the connections to the USB socket from the motherboard outlet. Might be a wire has come loose from a pin, or not connected properly in the first place. If the box is under warranty I would have it looked at under the warranty.

    Hi Shirl...

If you can't get it work following Paul's suggestion you could get yourself a 4 port USB Hub (they are quite cheap to buy)...plug it in the port that works and bingo 4 usb ports. If your USB is not at USB 2.0 you could also get yourself a USB 2.0 card. Mine came with 4 external and 1 internal ports.

So with 3 (one port being used by Hub) free ports on the card and the 4 ports on the Hub I have 7 USB 2.0 ports. I can now plug in my 2 printers, 1 camera, 1 Memory Card reader, and 1 external USB Hard Drive. I still have 3 free.

    Hi
I have no problem with the one usb it's just the second one. The computer is out of warranty a couple years old. I'm not to familiar with the wire checking so I would have to take it in. maybe I'll just buy one of those USB hubs. That way I won't have to keep unplugging the printer when I want to use my camera. Thanks for the advice.

About $15-20 at Radio Shack for the 4 port.

    Shirl,

Do you not have any rear USB ports on that m/c so that you can leave the printer plugged in?

In my experience the front ports do not always work for all things - never got round to fathoming that out, but I've come across it more than once.

Rear ports are soldered direct to the motherboard, but the front are cabled to connections on the mobo - no idea why that should make a difference.

    Hi Pete C
I am totally red faced, here I sat for two years and thought I only had USP plugs on the front. I just turned the box around and here sits two of them on the backside. So I plugged my printer in the back, that way at least I know it's going to work and I won't have to plug it in and unplug it. Thanks for the tip. Gee maybe I better change my status from intermediate, to still learning. LOL
    Thanks
    Shirl

    Hi Pete
That's a good excuse "A Senior Moment" That's what I had! Too bad I'm no longer a Senior in High School then those Senior moments wouldn't be so bad. :)

Sometimes front USB ports don't have the juice as do the ones in the rear.

That statement needs to be qualified, Pete ... SOME rear ports are on the mainboard. On my computer, there are two rear ports (USB 1.1) on the board, but four 2.0 ports on a PCI mounting bracket (no PCI card) cabled to the board, as are the two 1.1 ports on the front. The computer came from the manufacturer configured that way.

    Agreed, Jim

My current mobo has 4 x USB rear ports - all soldered to the board. The add on bracket containes only firewire ports. I build my own PC's.
